what is the ideal amount of revs to take off at during a drag? and also what revs is it best to change gears at?

this isnt for a drag, but for my 89 exa with extractors, i found that changing from 1st to 2nd i lose the least power changing at aroun 3500-4K rpm any less than this and the car really takes time to pick up revs.... would this be right sumone who knows more than me?!?!?!

off the line the best revs are around 2-3000 rpm....you should have little wheel spin and alot of push. At least this is how my ga16i is.

yeh i probably launch at about 3-4k and there is normally a fair bit of wheel spin, then when i change to second theres some wheel spin too, although i dont normally pay much attention when i change gears i think its about 7-8 i change when it spins

hmmm... has anyone hit the rev limiter.... coz i was crazy as one day and decided to fully redline it... between 8,500 - 9,000RPM but hmmmm the limiter didnt cut in.... but i will tell ya one thing i wont do that again most probs put a piston through the block! so is there a limiter....

and yeah there is no point really redlining a car coz peak power is a way lot lower... ehh.. if thats the wrong word u guys will kno what i mean

I had a bad habit of using the rev limiter as a shift indicator, maybe thats why I put a piston through the side of the block ;)

With launching it, it really depends on suspension, tyres, wheels and clutch. All of those combinations and I would dump mine at 5000 rpm, got abit of wheel spin but also didn't grip too early and bog in or just smoke up and not move.

Each combination and road surface will require a different technique, just practice it. Or alternativly don't drop the clutch but just ride it slightly to control wheel spin. Don't expect your clutch to last too long either way though.

Hey,
you shift "when it spins? Which is around 7k-8k rpm." Are you joking? Unless you got a t88 @ 30psi that doesnt spool till 7800rpm, then I cant see you breaking traction at those revs...

Plus, aftermarket camshafts alter the power band area of a motor - so it is possible to have a car that produces most of its power at redline- but not very practicle, I know!
I agree wit hRhys, go and practice. you will feel when the motor stops pushing you back in your seat - this is time to change gears (or just before!) And if your motor is as lacking as mine is down low - I suggest you dont drop the clutch. "Vrrrm Vrrrm Vrrrm, BOG.......... VRRRRRRRRRRRM." lol thats why I put in the anti-lag launch controll! Damn thing was too hard to get a good launch otherwise....

Yah, I must say if I am trying to take off quickly, I can give it a quick rev to about 2500rpm and chirp no worries by just letting the clutch out quickly (but not dumped!). If I dropped it from 3k it spins like a bastard and i can play with it in first and second (depending on surface - but i'm talking smooth road still). Thats an '88 exa with fairly basic mods at this stage, but i must admit she runs well when she wants to (i have beaten two N13 Turbos :) ). I wouldn't dialin more than 3k revs with a standard exa, they just don't need it.... Any more and you can most likely spin then wheels until you get bored, run out of rubber, or decide it was a stupid bloody idea in the first place. :flashsmil
