Is there any point having an air pod on a non turbo?

Hey,
EFI or carby? Efi there is a point (and possibly carby aswell) We put a pod on my mates carby civic and it didnt really pick up much.We took the round filter out of the little plenum style sorta thing and had a pipe going over behind the headlight with a pod on it to get colder air... I'd say Pod anyway - there cheaper than std. filters, washable and should flow better...

its an e15 EFI.

would i need to bother with relocating the AFM as its not really an issue getting the air to the turbo?

basically all an air pod does (besides filter the air) is allow air through. By putting a pod on rather than a stock filter, the main aim is to reduce the amount of restriction. This allows the engine to breathe easier.
Basically, it is an advantage to any engine, in theory, and is about the same as putting on an exhaust.

And yes, relocating the inlet will do the same, less length = less restriction and so the engine will produce more power.

so in theroy i could reloacte my afm to right in front of my throttle body and have a pod off near the battery with a big CAI? (only cause i've got an NA)

if you wanted to be real cosmetic and overboard you could have a bonnet scoop that feeds straight into the pod kinda thing? as a CAI?

shit yeh, one of my mates did that, the pod was rubbing onthe bonnet so he cut a whole, and stuck a bigger pod through. went really well at night.
it is illegal though :hitwall:

Changaz - your car is looking mint mate! Congrats!

Just on the topic of
And yes, relocating the inlet will do the same, less length = less restriction and so the engine will produce more power..

I read an article where they did tests on a Dino to see if the air intake length made any difference to the performance and the finding where that there was an optimal length to have the intake pipe. So wacking the filter right on the intake manifold may not be as beneficial as you think.

I will see if I can find the article and I will post the link.

Hey,
yes thats right... You need to give the air room to loose its turbulance. Plus if you put (for example - a pod right on the throttle body) the air would have to be sucked through that straight away - instead of having a couple of litres there ready to go before sucking through the filter. But on the other hand - if you have too much piping - the air has to be sucked from a long way away after its used the air in the pipe... So yes, you need a happy medium!

that is totally correct, i have seen evidence of it, and have read the article.

The reason i say its a benefit on an efi e15 is the amount of bends in the inlet.
I recon there would have to be 2 metres of inlet piping with 3 major 90degree bends, if you replaced that by a foot or so of straight or minorly bent piping it would have to be better than the 2m of bent restrictive piping even if it wasnt the tuned length.

on lancers and mirages they actually have a vessel on the inlet manafold that is a fixed volume to suit the resonance and turbulance on the inlet, if you take it off you loose power. Hot 4's did an article on that too.

sam - Thanks heaps man, its getting there. Saving for paint now, then ill be happy!

ok that autospeed site is really annoying! they let you read the start of the article then ask you to pay to read the rest!

was reading the article on CAI was getting interesting till it asked for money

They did have free articles once upon a time, the one I'm thinking of was free.

I have been trying to find someone that has paid for the site with no luck.
