Free mod, did this last night and it definately got the beast breathing a little easier. Definate improvement in power and throttle response, should be even better once I get a sports filter.

I took the airbox out to have a look, the design is actually quite good and the top half doesnt need to be modified... the only thing I'd think about doing is bashing the metal ring a bit flatter on the filter side.

The bottom half has a little pipe coming into it which is just held on by 3 rivets. Drill those out, cut the rest of that panel out and smooth it up with a file... b00m

Later I'll get some piping and run something from the bottom of the car up to the airbox.

yah, it's a noticeable difference... i imagine cutting it up and putting a sports filter in would make a huge one.

B4 it felt as if intake was the bottle neck on power... its definately more responsive.. I think doing the exhaust now will improve it a lot

DO NOT BASH THE METAL RING FLAT! That gold colored ring acts as an aithorn to help the MAF read the incoming air better. It also accelerates the intake airflow. It is a desirable design. I know this first hand. Ever see a billet airhorn under a filter? It helps smoothes out the airflow into the MAF.
Here is a nice trick taken off the http://www.se-r.net

Actually this page was taken down off the web, but I pulled it back up with a thing called "The Wayback Machine" It is a web archive search engine. Enjoy it!
