I'm trying to find out if there is an advantage in using an external wastegate versus an internal wastegate. So I would know if I should buy an external or not.

External wastegates are most useful for BIG power and BIG boost applications, more accurate boost control.
There is no reason why you couldn't successfully use an internal wastegate, I am about to buy a 350hp garret ball bearing turbo for mine which has an internal wastegate, I realistically wont be making MASSIVE power with mine, so an internal wastegate should do the job just fine.

yea i got a gt25 so I guess I'll stick with the internal. planing on running something like 20psi.

go external man!

Yeah man, 20 psi IS big boost dude, above about 18psi you would want to start thinking about using an external wastegate......

it depends on the turbo and the wastegate actuator
you can get wastegate actuators that are so loose they won't hold above 15psi,
but you can get upgraded internal wastegate actuators that will hold 15psi minimum, and will hold up to 30psi!
this is ALOT cheaper than an external wastegate, as you need to modify your exhaust manifold and turbo to cater for the external gate.
if the turbo already has an internal wastegate, you will have to weld that shut also
external wastegates are also FUCKING loud, and will attaract the cops..
having said that, in my opinion, the coolest sound in the world is an external wastegate letting loose and blowing flames underneith the car, mmmm! :eyelids:

its all about flow
and how small the wastegate is
and external wastegates r fucking loud?thats because they r running direct to ground screemer pipes
run it back into the exhaust and u wont have such a loud noise it will be loud but attract no more attention then a internal wastegate would

I would think that an external wastegate dumping straight into the atmosphere would be fairly illegal, it's like having no cat or muffler at all.

I Like:heehee:

yeah ive seen them on a few cars
havent heard anything about legalitys but i think u would be right guy
probably illegal from a noise point of view and pollution as well

Hey,
yeah - illegal. Its illegal to have any part of your exhaust system entering the atmosphere before the back of teh car. Plus - it has the same pollution and sound level restrictions as your main exhaust. Mind you - if you have a look at early RX7 turbo factory exhaust - I believe they have the wastegate line seperate to the exhaust all teh way down the length of the car!!! Even has its own little cat/muffler!!! Now if they did it, there was obviously a fair benefit to be had! Teh otehr idea I have seen which is a great idea - is make your exhaust so as the wastegate line joins in with the exhasut at about your firewall - but, have a bit theat bolts out so you can have a screamer pipe when you want to ;)

Nice one man, that's a bloody good idea having the bit u can unbolt from the screamer pipe to "SCREAM"! Will have to suss that out once I get this fat arsed turbo in and sorted.

question for exa18. How are you going about mounting your turbo. I was thinking about getting an adapter built to go from a ca18de to the t3 or det to t3. similar to what's in this picture.

The 350hp garrett turbo I am hoping to get actually bolts straight up to my manifold, it has the same flange on it as my exhaust manifold. As to an adaptor plate, it's pretty much the easiest way to go, unless you want to fabricate a new exhaust manifold.
