Update Friday 7th Jan, 2005:

Car registered today, I'm on the road now guys! Watch out for me! if you see me then honk! Plates THP-171. I tend to hang on the ring road alot.

This thread has completed its purpose of recording my process of repairing and getting my nx-r back onto the road.

Future plans would be to replace the clutch, since i've noticed it slips and a few weird characteristics with it.

Update Saturday 25th Dec, 2004 (Yay Christmas!):

Just got spare time to update this today, lounging around. The car went in for a VIV test yesterday and passed, repairs were good. Roadworthy worries, I have a leaking oil switch. Can someone point out where the oil switch is? I can't find it. I also need to replace the 2 rear rotors, they are too thin. Those are the only rwc worries.

Not long now till the car is on the road! YAY!

Hope you all had a very good christmas! :xmastree:

Update Saturday 4th Dec, 2004:

Ok another update, I found a switch underneath the drivers side dash, near the accelerator pedal, flipped it, and alarm was disabled, and I could start the car. Easy.

At start up there was a loud rattling sound, but we found out it was because of lack of power steering fluid, no more loudness. No hassles motor runs smooth, idles at 800rpm, no black smoke. However I do hear some rattling near the passenger side near the injectors, probably something small. Revs good with new panel filter.

Took all seats out, and cleaned the interior. Cleaned some rails, put everything back.

Update Tuesday 30th Nov, 2004:

Ok we bought the radiator, ($50 including 2 fans from wreckers  ) . Fitted it in, all mounts no problem. Changed the oil using a Repco filter, and Valvoline Lo-Vis 10W-30 oil.

Tried to start her up, all the lights on the dash turn on, but it won't start. We suspect the alarm/immobiliser, which we do not have the remote to. There is no cranking sound from the ignition at all.
The signal lights flash and everything and when we turn the key on the alarm horn, it will ring.

Tape deck works, speakers fine.

Power windows work fine, except i can't open the passenger side window from the drivers side. When I flip the switch it will *click* on the passenger door, but the window won't go down, it will only go up. That is weird (I've never had power windows before).

So far i've asked strathfield, and they said they can come and bypass the alarm system so we can drive around for $50. Any other ideas guys?

Hi, jsut thought i'd share with you guys my process of repairing my nx. the work done has been by me and my dad in our home garage. I know this should belong in the multimedia forum aswell, but i thought it should sit in here since theres not much activity and it is very nx related :sarc:

as you can see, this is how i got it...
http://members.optushome.com.au/dabat/M1630456_1.jpg

and then we stripped it...

http://members.optushome.com.au/dabat/DSC01168.JPG

and repaired it, bought parts from wreckers.. and here is the front end now...

thanks bogan

my interior also needs some work, the leather on the steering wheel has come loose, any ideas other than tennis racquet handle tape?

Is that a nose-cut from Japan? Looks like it to me with the number plate mount and aerial mount (?) on the front left.

Looks good anyway, I had a smash that looked almost exactly the same. See the attachment below. You might find it cheaper or better to get an aftermarket aluminium radiator while you are at it. Theres a Koyo rad that fits like a gem. I got an NX1600 radiator put in which is supposed to be a bit bigger than the stock one.

With the steering wheel try an auto upholsterer. They may be able to re-stitch the wheel if not then go for a good Momo wheel or something similar.

wow, a very similiar crash, i didn't own the car before the crash, i bought it for 1g damaged.
so far my parts have totaled 600.

I got the front bar from the wreckers and same with the bonnet and lights, i'm unsure of the origin. although the bonnet does have japenese writing/stickers under it.

Do you have a link or contact or something for the radiator? Sounds interesting.

As for the steering wheel, the leather has been worn down aswell as being loose, you can see the white 'skin' on some parts of the wheel. As for a replacement wheel, i have cruise control buttons on the steering wheel, what will i do with those?

thanks for your info tissue, have you repaired your nxr aswell?

Your number plate mounting point was a standard fitment for the nx, most people remove them cos they look a bit shitty, IMO, except for my olds who left the same setup on their prelude and it was teh ghey.

mio
9th November 2004, 03:44 PM
It does look shitty imo aswell, it will be removed, but its there to hold the bumper so it doesn't scratch when we place it on the floor.

One thing i noticed is, why does mine have a black line trim, across the middle and many nx's i've seen have body coloured trim? eg tissue has completely white bumper, mine has a black stripe.

go to the wreckers and buy another stock wheel.. or u can get the cruiser control buttons attached to some after market wheels...

Some nx/nx-r's came from the factory colour coded, others have been done by people who hate the fugly black strip, best bet is when you have all the parts to complete your car, get the whole thing resprayed the colour you want, red again would be easiest and have them colour code the bump strip, side mirrors and if need be door handles, best way to go for sure, and nice work on the resto job, good on ya for making a coupe live again.

just a question abiout the mounts behind the nose piece did u straightn the whole front and if so is it easy to do, i have a crash damage on the fron right i ahve to fix but it is gona cost me over a 1g to 2g to pay for it,

mio
9th November 2004, 10:22 PM
Garlo: The bottom bar across was not damaged at all, and was perfectly straight. As for the top, you can see it is twisted in the photo. We used a normal car jack at different points to straighten the bar, push it out, push it up, and also used a hook and chain attached to the garage to pull the bar upwards at certain areas and pull it outwards.

We used a hammer and some panel beating metal pieces to reshape around the lights.

Used tape measure etc. to check everything was straight and measured up correctly.

As for the nose piece, it is held by the the side panels, and the crash brace, not by the middle arms/bars. Hell of alot of screws they used i might add.

Why not take a photo of your damage and so the forum can see?

NXR20T, blood: Thanks for the support, and the information about the colouring. I think we will spray it ourselves. theres also scratches on the bonnet and bumper when we got it from the wreckers. but those things are least to worry about right now.

oh, and a small request to people with nx's here, if you could take a photo of your headlights and how they sit on your bumper, as mine aren't flush with the bumper, and maybe i'll need to adjust their positions with some more beating. Are they meant to sit flush with the bumper? are the rubber surrounds for the headlights just visible?

mio
10th November 2004, 11:56 AM
NXR: they do sit pretty close to the bumper, even though you have headlight protectors.. Thanks for the picture! Your nxr looks very clean

NXT51: Thanks for the praise, i promise every1 i'll have it off when its finished and show you more pics, and hopefully make it in time for some cruises in melbourne.

if ya need a better pic i can take one

mio
10th November 2004, 03:30 PM
Garlo: From what those pics looks like its just cracked your bumper and perhaps your lights have been pushed back a fraction. Not that much damage. Probably replace your bumper since it is plastic, and you can take off and fix your side panel with some hammering and different shaped metal pieces. For the bonnet, if the skeleton hasn't been damaged, and only the edge has been folded, then it should be easy to fix no problem. The NX-R fog light lip is hard to find though. The bonnet should set you back $300 from the wreckers, a side panel roughly $100-200 if you don't want to fix yourself. The headlight, $90.

If you find that your headlight has been pushed backwards, use a wooden piece, and hammer to bring the bolts back outward a bit so it sits in its original position again.

Garlo
10th November 2004, 04:14 PM
ya after geting a 2nd quote back i will be attempting to do it my self.
the bottom bar is slightly broken, i have got a headlight allready got it for $125, but the only thing i am worried about is behind the front guard after seeing the skamatics of the fron end lots of bits n pieces.
also with the front guard i am thinking of geting a custome front insted of the original

mio
10th November 2004, 04:47 PM
ah, thats great, best luck to you, remember to show us the front when it's finished!

My NXR is on a small budget, so we couldn't afford to buy all this stuff.

NXT51
11th November 2004, 12:15 PM
mio, i had a close look at my front lights today. the bumper does sit flush up against the rubber around the edge of the light. I could see about 5-8mm of rubber? Does this help?

NXR20T
11th November 2004, 03:40 PM
hey mio I have pm'd you with a few contacts that I use to source hard to get nx/nx-r parts through, I think your cause is worthy of the info, I know that they are all interstae and postage may be hard to pay for as well buts its an option, cheers
Brett.

mio
11th November 2004, 07:37 PM
NXT51, Thanks for that information, my lights have a slight .5cm gap from the bumper. meaning there is empty space and the rubber surround does not touch the bumper plastic.
Maybe I need to push my lights out further?

NXR20T, thanks for those contacts, all I need is a lip, maybe I will try fix my broken one, if not, i'll figure it out, maybe an erebuni kit, with a wind cutter on the bottom. I'm on a budget so if the costs for this are too much i'll just have to wait a while before I can afford anything. Thanks alot! (again)

I will continue to update with pictures of repairs as it progresses, weather has been pretty bad, and exams, so work has stalled for a week.

NXR20T
11th November 2004, 07:48 PM
also if you need a radiator, see if a n14 pulsar one will fit, the n14 and b13 share alot of engine hardware, if so it should make it easier and therefore cheaper to source, I will ask on the pga forum aswell.

Brett.

mio
12th November 2004, 12:28 AM
Thanks, i've been looking at the n14's, some fit, some don't, i've already narrowed down the radiator to be about $150. Just going to change belts, oil, coolant, filters, and all will be up and running.

NXT51
12th November 2004, 10:23 AM
Yeh there should be no gap between the plastic of the nose and the rubber around the light.

I see you still have the boot hydraulic arms in your sig. Did you end up finding out about re-gassing? :bookread: I checked my receipt - $90 for both to be re-gassed about a year ago.

Nice progress with the repairs, should work out to be a good price once you complete it.

Yes, i've calculated it to approx $2500 when i'm finished and on the road, with 150k's on the clock. then i can spend some on mods etc.

NXT51: That front bar isn't the stock one for nxr, it looks like its an ad on with two bulkier parts around the 2 fog lights.
Thanks of the info on regassing, what kind of place do I look for that would do regassing?

mio

vjarn, the front bumper shown in the pic is one piece, although its an nx-r so there should be an extra piece which ads underneath it, I have yet to find another of that piece for sale.

Anybody selling?

I had a similar problem, alarm but faulty remote came with the car. When I bought a new alarm though the installer removed it for me for free. I guess thats an option, but if you want to do it on the cheap then go for the strathfield option.

i thought id ad to this dont ever get hit from an angel like mine it is a total Bitch to straighten up, and also to take of the fornt bumper on the NXR ended up takeing or the front whells to get in ther to do it and still had issues, mind u me and my mater where going in to it blidly to start with, i managed to bend some of it back BUT it is still bent BUT i finaly replace my right headlight, so no more defect paranoia for me.
after todays efforts i am thinking it will never be straight again, UNLESS i gop to a panelbeater an fork out a shit load of cash (not going to happen in the near future)
just a question mio after u fixed the front end how srtights was it and do u ahve any pics.
the next think i am going to do is get a new right gard but i am thinking it is pointles cause the front end has to be pulled the the left (looking from infront of the car).
anyway that is my grip about my car for the moment, oh and i did hammer out the gard and the bonet so it is sort of striaght, ill put some pics up later today, eater here or in a new topic

Mine is A4 straight, something like a slide rule, but custom built to measure the distance between bolts on both ends, and hammer under it is completely straight and even. this goes with height aswell.
