i'm changing my timing belt and alternator belt on the weekend so if anyone needs any help doing it in the future i should be able to help

its amazing how cheap the actual belts were
timing belt was like $11
alt belt was like $8
which is pretty damn cheap so im not complaining.

i dont think the job will be to hard... so i'll post details on how to change it and everything on saterday or something if people want :)

Sweet!

I heard if you take the air conditioning belt thingo off, it gives you a little more power! Is this true? Also... that factory blow off valve thingo, the thing that looks like a small tin can... i heard if they're removed and properly blocked off with a screw-in blocking plug, it also gives you more power and perhaps the slightest more boost... Is this true?

taking the air con belt off if you have air con = no more air con

and your not really gonna have an air con belt on if you dont have air con...

the other belt is like the alternator belt if you take that off your cars just not gonna run

ok the timings belt done! it was pretty easy to do. one of the easiest i've done actually. its pretty straight forward to.

1. get the alternator belt off and then take off the 2 pulleys blocking the timing belt cover

2. unscrew the timing belt cover (which is really stupid they should have used bolts)

3. line up the top and bottom timing marks

4. untension the spring tensioner and rip the old belt out

5. making sure all you marks are still in place (extremely important to make sure nothings moved) put the new belt on

6. remember to nip up the tensioner bolt again

7. turn the engine over by hand twice and recheck the marks

8. put it all back together!

i saw a noticable difference in the car straight away with the new belt on which is good! so i'm happy with the job.

and dont have a hard night like me the night before didn't end up sleeping and i was a bloody space cadet which made the job all that much harder, slower, and annoying!

oh yeh as a guide timing belts usually last about 100 000kms...

taking your air con belt off will definitely give you more power, air con drains 2-4kw depending on the car, so its not a great increase, but usually noticable on a car with only 70kw at the flywheel to start with.

doing a timing belt is piss easy, so many people fuck it up somehow, it is just a case of line everything up, pull it off and put it all back on. If you take care it is simple.

good to see someone else willing to help others, i have helped a few other exa/et owners as i know most of the people on this group have.

i usually do it just so i can check out other peoples mods!:tonguepla

i guess thats a pretty good reason to get under the hood of a fellow owners car!

compared to other timing belts i've done since then the timing belt on the EXA is by far the easiest i've seen. mind you im un-mod'd so theres tons of room under the hood.

i did my girlfriends 98 festiva's timing belt about a month ago, there is litterally an inch of room between the end of the motor and the inner guard.
to take the crank pulley off was a mission, there was not even enough room to fit a socke onto the bolt, i had to use a double ring spanner witha big pipe, but you can only turn a little way before it hits the lower control arm, took ages!

Hey,
hehe - they are awesomely cheap arent they!

Plus, whe nyou get more modded, you'll find that the engine bay actually gets less cluttered...
