Hi all. I am a bit of a complete novice when it comes to mechanics, but would really like to improve my nxr. Lately it hasn't been running as well as it should, so I want to improve the performance. I was thinking of starting with an engine replacement. Can anybody tell me what is the engine that comes stock standard with the NXR? Is it the sr20de? How can I tell by looking at the engine, what it is? Is an upgrade to the sr20det a good starting improvement to make to an NXR? Is there anybody in Brisbane that somebody could recommend to perform an sr20det engine replacement? Thanks!

shoul most probly be an SR20de, have a look on the compliance plate (metal plate bolted onto the chasis under the hood) it will have a series of numbers most likely starting with SR20. I am also looking for a good place in brisbane, i have talked to the guys at MAzfix and they quoted me 7-8K conversion in my NX. these guys are prety good. hope this helps ;)

How much did it cost and what problems did you have, apart from not having fuel in your tank?

Just had to fabricate a few pipes and a cross member has to be modified, and if done incorrectly will loose all integrity / strength

do not go to mazfix, i repeat do not go to mazfix, they cant even get rotaries to run right, i have several mates with rotaries andd they would never go there, the only way you can get them to any kinda work is pay em about twice what the job is actuly worth. And mate if they cant even get rotaries to run right, what hope have they got wiith pistons. E.g, my mates Pac rx3 went thier with a mild tune from pac and made 430rwhp, after a mazfix tune it made 330rwhp and archie (the owner) assured my mate this is all the car could produce.... hrmmm, since the car was returned to pac in sydney and now makes a healthy 550rwhp.
umm thier are a few places that could do it for ya, try cafe 101 just near moss street, mercury motorsport, and perfourmance which is also near moss street, i know that all of these places have already done conversions in the NX-r's and might have some good knoweledge to pass on to ya.

7-8k sounds a bit excessive, and i can't understand why the crossmember would have to be modified seeing as though the engine is essentially the same except turbo. i would have guessed at more like 4-5k.

Well I dont normally spend money on things just for the fun of it. Nor does anyone else who has done exactly the same thing.

I was talkign with SirNX the other night..
he has the engine from the GTiR Pulsar i believe... and it bolts straight in, no mods.
--- is that right dave ?

anyhow.. i am looking at doing this, as i have aquired a large amopunt of cash...
wife will only let me spend around 3 k on it...

found a mate that can supply & fit for 3. , but then i need turb-timer, and gauge ect....
whats a stock engine worth ? (sr20de)

I didn't really know who you were nx-tacy - I wanted to chat a maccas but you were gone! Your nx is quick of the mark but lacks in top end - tylical of a U13 engine. Mine is the opposite, lacks off the line but awesome top end! I wish I was another gea down in our second race!! that wold have been good fun!!!
I like your car - true sleper. We must catch up on a cruise some time.
;) anyway my name is dave - don't hesitate to come talk to me if you see me around!

And yes blood - GTiR is bolt in...... easiest of the SR20 fwd coversions - don't be scared! get into it!!!
If you really want to do it on the cheap - keep your motor, find a turbo, manifold, afm, turbo injectors and computer and bolt them onto the atmo engine. This too I have done, and if you keep your boost below 9psi.... holy fuck!! Then there is no coversion to do!!

Talk later!

OH, of course you will still need fuel pump and intercooler, but it definately works and is reliable at low boost. Remember - rule of thumb is 5psi boost on an atmo engine = approx 10psi on a turbo motor.... (in regards to power output)

I have a mate with an atmo sr20 in at datsun 1600 that has turbo, manifold afm, comp, turbo injectors and fmic - he drives past me on only 9psi...... on the hyway!!! his thing ran a 13.2 @ 107mph just last saturday at willowbank. The engine has now been running daily, turbocharged, for over 18mths! No breakdowns, no problems, and LIGHTNING throttle response!!!

Certainly, on a budget, this is DEFINATLEY the way to go. You will easily make your budget of 3k doing it this way..... you wont if you put in a GTiR engine.....
Some thing for you to think about anyway.......

Yeah i was changing to late once it gets past 6g it runs out of puff..but yeah no cooler and small turbo certainly helps off the mark....like i said have to go to a TNT and find out
o and What boost you running...i'm to scared of trying anything past 7psi ..will it make much difference??

Hey, If your have no cooler, I wouldnt' run past 9-10. Once you have a cooler run 12-14psi if it is a U13 no sweat..
I was running 12psi the night I raced you (hot night) but I usually run 16psi. Now tha it is getting cooler, I will be screwing it back up...!! :)
