Hi, i just bought a 91 NX 2000 5spd with 204,000km on it. The engine seems to be in good shape, however the body could use some work.

Anyways, I was driving it home for the first time, and when i was on the highway, going about 90km/h, i dropped it into neutral to coast down a slope, and after a while the tachometer started waving up and down for a while (from 700rpm to near 1500) then the engine shut off. I turned the ignition on and it started again, but whenever i take it out of gear the engine revs up and down. This only happens when its moving, at 0km/h it idles fine.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I know the car needs a tune-up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor etc.) Could that possibly fix it? It seems like something a little more serious, but i really hope its not an expensive thing.

Thanks for any help.

G'day mate,

common problem with the SR's, to fix it on my car i ended up buying a new air flow sensor, and cleaned the throttle body and readjusted the timing. This sorted all ideling problems and fluctuation in revs. A friend of mine has a n15 sss and he only needed to clean his throttle body, and adjust his timing.
As sad as it is when nissan services ther're cars they dont clean the throttle body at all they just adjust the idle to maintain it at 800 - 900 rpm, so when you do clean your throttle body properly the idle is all out of wack cause of the increased airflow going past it.
Other than that, try cleaning your plugs or buy new ones, or your oxygen sensor could be on its way out, and when it is hot doesnt read correctly....
Keep trying mate, it took me like 6 months to get mine right, but it kicks arse now!!! my engine has got 220000k's as well.

oh man! I got a quote for the air intake sensor today from Nissan, it's $400cdn. I think i'd like to try everything else before i replace that.

Thanks for the help.

try aftermarket auto places like autobarn, repco, supercheap they can order in this stuff and would probly get much cheaper than that.

The sensor is probably not the cause, i just found out that the EGR valve is siezed and the previous owner had it blocked off.

mate i think 90% of sr20's i have seen have had the egr blocked off, give it some time and loving mate, take of your lead of ya coil and check for dirt and gunk in thier, mine for some reson had quite a bit of shit in thier when i first got it, also another thing you can try is resetting your ecu. You should also check how ganked up your throttle body is, and make sure your tps (throttle positioning sensor) isnt being obstructed.
I am nearly sure it isnt any more serious then that

How do you properly block it off, cause i dont think the previous owner did it right. He just took the little hose off and put a screw in to close it. When i put my hand under the EGR valve and pushed it up, the car turned off.

I had a similar problem with my Chrysler and the dealer closed it off and it didnt turn off anymore it just had a rough idle. The NX still turns off.

put a ballbearing slightly larger in diametre of the hose in it. Also play with your connectors going to your coil, tps and air flow sensor, take them off and give them a clean, maybe even spray just a touch of water dispersant (like wd40 or rp7) on the terminals. Failing this, you might want to take it somewhere that can hook it up to a computer and cheak everything and hopefuly diagnose the problem for you.
It did take me a couple of months of tediouse shit to get it to run how i like it, and plenty of italian tunes on the freeway!! :driving:

woah hang on a sec, what's an EGR and why should it be shut off?

i dont know what it stands for, i think it is emmision gas regulator or some shit like that, its apart of your emmision system, and you block the pipe that feeds all this shit back into your engine. not essential, people normaly do it when the egr valve screws up and this is a way around replacing it, next time we're cruising clair i will tell ya if it's blocked off or not on your car.
