View Full Version : a/c problem in NX-R

i bought my nx-r a few months back with the air-conditioner not working.
i thought it only needed a routine re-gass, but i soon found out the extractors melted one of the pipes. a shop fixed it up for 300 bucks.
after this i thought it would be alrite, but my a/c started playing up within a week. It got cool sometimes. Then, one day when it was turned on, it made a loud screech noise and my engine shut off!.
so, basically, whenever i turn on my a/c, my engine turns off!!
1) any solution to this problem?
2) do i need a new compressor?
3) is this common?

it seems like the compressor is seized? does it shut off when your revving it above idle speed?

i had the same problem.. i went in for a routine check
only to cost 50 bucks
then they ring me back saying that i need a new compressor cause its stalling my engine
and then they said its better spending the extra 200 to get a whole new fixture
costing 1500!!!!
what a joke so im left without a/c

lol
my a/c comp is prolly gonna die soon, it makes a high pitched noise and REALLY fights the engine, sad to hear the prices involved :(

hey mate.
I had a similar problem to what you have explained.
I put extractors on, and its caused a small split in a hose, much like yours did. This let all the air con gas out of the system, and therefore i had no gas left.
Check your air con gas level by purging a bit.
I dug up a ol pic on my sr20de, i ended up heat wrapping the problem pipe, which you can see is the one running above the extractors in the pic.
I was interested to note that the gtir pipe in the same place comes wrapped from factory........
Goodluck
oh the other thing to make sure the belt actually goes around the a/c compressor, i can think of someone that was complaining about their aircon that doesnt even have a belt on the compressor hehe.

To anyone with extractors reading this thread, definately wrap that hose up. Ive heard of at least 6-7 cases just on here and PGA of the hose melting through. The best thing to wrap it with is this self-adhesive fibreglass heat tape with an aluminium surface. You can pick it up from Autobarn or online from the Autospeed shop. Its made by High Energy and called 'Cooltube' or something.
I wrapped mine 2 days ago and its made a fair difference to the temp of the air con too. Since I put extractors on and a underdriven pulley the air con has been shoddy but now its great. The shop that did my exhaust actually put some insulation on the problem area when they did it but I just wrapped the whole hose.

Tissue,
Is that fibre glass wrap stuff removable? I can't remember what the hose looks like, but I'm guessing it's a normal black type hose, so did you replace it before you wrapped it?
Looks like something I have to do before the A/C causes me too many problems.
Thanks,
Mek

Yeah the fibreglass stuff is removable, the adhesive on it isnt too strong but it shouldnt fall off. I didnt replace the black rubber hose section as it wasnt leaking yet, and if I replaced it I would have to go the whole re-gas route which is a pain.

Siezed compressor pulley or bad compressor clutch. Either way, you need a new compressor it seems like.

Went out and got some of that heat resistant fibreglass tape on the weekend. I got it from Motorquipe – It was called “Thermo” something and was $50 for a 5 metre roll. I was lucky enough to convince the chick I only needed half of that so she charged me $25 for 2.5 metres. I reckon that’s pretty pricy for what it actually is but it was certainly worth it (how much did you other guys pay for it?). My A/C pipe wasn’t damaged but I noticed it was getting extremely hot. My A/C used to take 2 or 3 minutes before it even felt like cool air was coming through the vents when I turned it on and then around another 5 – 10 minutes before it was fully operating. I had the car parked outside in full sun, on a 32C day yesterday and the A/C was working a lot better. I could feel cool air within 5 seconds and it was fully operating within 3 minutes. It felt a fair bit cooler too. I definitely recommend doing this.

In reply to the original post - I have had the exact same problem in the last week. Turn the air-con on and there is a pretty ugly noise and the engine cuts out.
Mechanic advises it is a seized compressor- so far options are :
1)$900 for new part from nissan(plus install)
2)$700 for a reconditioned unit fully fitted
3)I have found a couple second hand at wreckers but they want $500 plus installation (which doesn't seem very good value with zero warranty and being just as old as the unit that failed).
I'll be trying more wreckers in case someone has them for $200, otherwise going with the reconditioned option. Good luck with yours.

David
