hey

I dont know much about cars and stuff.. I wanna know a bit so ill know if my mechanic is dodgin me. heres the problem:

Somethin's gone seriously wrong with my gearbox/clutch or something...
A few times over the last few days it has wackedly refused to go into 1st and ive been stuck at the lights for like 30secs untill it suddenly let it go in gear...
It got worse and there was this loud highpitched grinding and whining sound in 2nd... and other bad noises even in 1st when i start to move....
Got worse again and i couldn't even get into reverse to take it to the mechanic... the engine sounds normal when ive got the clutch in... but when i release the clutch (even in neutral) theres a bad sound... it let me get into secand so i managed to crawl my way to the mechanic eventually before it fully died when i got there... The guys gonna look at it and get back to me... but ive already payed this guy shyteloads fixin other stuff so i wanna be sure hes not dodgin me..

Anyone know about this stuff? If possible could someone give me an idea of what i should expect to pay

thanks

hey dude

Well the problem there could be a number of things. You didn't tell us what the mechanic said the problem was.

anyway.. you said that there was a grinding noise in second... does that happen all the time?

Sounds like a clutch problem, which is fairly straight forward to fix... clutch about $300, machine flywheel $40 and whatever his labour is. But cos of the grinding.... it makes it ever so difficult cos that could be the gearbox.. it could be anything now. But to buy another N12 turbo gearbox, which are pretty hard to find i understand. That could go up to $800.

Coming to think about it.... I reckon you've smashed second gear. And the gears in second are pretty much dead... cost more to rebuild than to buy a second hand box.
Also if you choose to buy a second box i'd recommend getting the box rekitted with new bearings. I think the kit costs about $380. its a small price to pay considering the gearbox runs quietly.

I hope this helps you... gotta give more info for us to determine the problem

N12 turbo gearbox, which are pretty hard to find i understand. That could go up to $800.
they are not real hard to find, most importers or wreckers can get them, usually no more than 500 dollars.

Also if you choose to buy a second box i'd recommend getting the box rekitted with new bearings. I think the kit costs about $380.
its around 1500 for a reco, so to buy a box, 500 plus the reco kit, 380 plus labour, you are looking at over 1500, either get a good nick jap import box, or just reco yours.
for 1500 you can get a kit to fit up a n13 sss lsd box, so dont fuck around with recoing an n12 box.

Sounds like a clutch problem
while still a possiblilty, a clutch problem will prevent it from going into gear smoothly, but when in gear there shouldnt be much noise. The only way this could happen is if the spiggot is riding and is fucked or the diaphram has collapsed and is hitting the clutch plate.
This should result in a loss of drive pretty quickly, engine will rev but car wont move.

i would get the mechanic to see what the prob is, then think of your options. IF its a gearbox, you could go wreckers, or import, or n13, if its a clutch you can get a 80dollar replacement, or a 250 bb replacement. it all depends on what mods your car has as to how extreme, and mainly how much you wanna spend
