Alright, so my dad is a little crazy. The old man is spitting bullets because my NX has a minor oil leak on the timing chain cover. I told him I tried to get it fixed and the idiots at the repair shop couldn't get it to stop. Well he told me that it has to be the rear main in the oil pan thats leaking, even though I know its not. The problem was a small hole in my timing chain cover that started to leak so I welded it at work and it still leaks a little. The only problem is he's pissed because i'm getting his driveway all dirty. So I either fix it or the car has to go. So i have one question that I should have asked a while back.
Does the timing chain cover on the e16i have a gasket? Because when I had the cover put back on by the repair shop, they said it did not have a gasket. And if there isn't one anyone know what I could do to stop the leak, short of replacing it. The part is kinda hard to find where I'm at.

They had the E16i's in the 90's there? You sure you don't have the GA16i? (Is it the 12 valve rocker cover?)
Either way. On the E16i the timing BELT cover is plastic and does indeed have a gasket that can be picked up from any Nissan parts dept. (I can get you the part number and rough price from when I bought mine a few months back.)
On the GA16i if you're leaking oil from the crank pully side, and you seem to have an oil coated engine bay on that side you might have a dried out crank seal (I had this go on an '89 that I had about once a year... most garages will bend you over... at the knees... forwards... to do this job. If you're pretty persistant I think you can get it replaced without removing most of the right side of the car and dropping the crossmember. Ask around if this is what it looks like.) For some strange reason in the northern US where they make the snow out of one part water and three parts road salt that seal seems to dry up on the outside and start to leak out onto the crank then the main pully where it's sprayed all over that side.
Of course... it may not be any of these... but it's a thought.

"Because when I had the cover put back on by the repair shop, they said it did not have a gasket. "
hmmm... that would be like; the mechanic not putting a piston, because the only currently in it is stuffed....
I cant really answer your question, if hte mechanic was working on it, he soiuld have supplied a new gasket??, any proper mechanic will not assemble hte rest of the equipment, if there is something missing. especially a gasket.
