Since we bought our Exa about 2 months back we had bad timming problems, the car drove basicly well but the preignition was horrible, just the thought of what it was doing to the big-ends and mains was gut cherning. But after taking the car to several mech around Brisbane trying to get it sorted out I finaly found a guy at Petrie Village Motors that had a fiar bit of experiance with the CA18, now there is no sign of the pre-ignition.

The problem with it was:
Initial timing marker (Tag) was bent and misalligned by upto 5deg, and the mech that firred the new timming belt had not noticed that and assembled the whole thing out of allignment, the current mechanic found this and now got the timming from 26deg to 15deg, (26 being the closest it would go).

Now, the problem I have now is getting a decent tuneup, for my $241 for labour for resetting the timming gear and cams I didn't get a decent tuneup.

Years back a dyno would give the best results of on-road tunning, but with all this computer bullshit under the bonnet I am not sure if it is worth while getting a dyno done, have some of you got some ideas for what to do here.

That isn't the end of it, the connecting point between the CAS and the Exaust Cam is reported to being flogged out, the mech said the play was minor but would allow for some small timming drift +-3 or so deg.. The replacement cost from nissan for a CAS and Cam fitted was $1800, so fuck that for a joke. I might be on the hunt soon for some good looking 2nd hand gear if that becomes an issue in the furture.

Now, is there someone in Brisbane who has some spare time to check out my cars computer and see what it has to say.. I have a bad back and can't get to the computer to do a reading of it. I am interested to see if it has some faults to report.

Also is there someone with a standard car that can taqke me for a small drive so I can compair your cars performance to mine, just to get an idea if my car is lacking in smoothness and power, I have a felling it's a dog at the moment, but with nothing to compair it too I am not sure if I should be expecting a lot more out of it or not.

I can drop by marks, but I won't have the Exa. Any chance we could meet up after you finish work. I drive my Ford to work and the misses takes the Exa, Maybe I could intyce you to a pizza dinner to come to my home ?

Hi-temp silicon (i recommend loctite coppermax) can often help when the Cam/CAS splines are worn. Interesting post to read actually, as since I had my import engine put in, the CAS does much less to advance timing, and it almost seems that the base has been set with the CAS already forward. So i can only slightly advance, but majorly retard the timing of my engine. Going to reset it all in a week or two now I've heard this, just in case :)

Has anyone found a good cheap way to overcome this problem?
