Hi Guys, i got an N12 with nearly dead gearbox, nearly failing head gasket, that starter motor grinding problem and crappy suspension. Should I,
1. Fix all those up, add a T25 and Intercooler (rough estimate of total cost please!??!) and Exhaust.
or
2. Get an N13 Exa and convert it to a CA18DET and add an EXHAUST?
what u reckon guys?

Hey,
You got same probs i had! gear-box will be bout $300-$500, depends what part of your suspension is stuffed, springs, shockers etc. ? Gasket i aint sure of, i had my whole engine rebuilt to stock for $2000, but just ya gasket, sam will know, hehe :p , T25 - $400-$600 (s/h)
Intercooler - however much u wanna spend, say a nice small supra cooler, or a series 4 or 5 Rx7 cooler does the job fine, or you can go all out like hieu(85EXABOY) and take up your whole front grill :D and a total exhaust, Dump, mid-section and Muffler can be done from a min. of say $400 or up to $1000
But to buy a decent N13, say $6000-$8000, then a CA18DET conversion... u are looking at ending up with at least $10,000-$15,000
All these prices are a rough estimate or my own experiences and anybody please correct me if i'm way out about the CA18DET conversion..... Or anything else i've over or under priced

Hey,
yeah - Dan is pretty spot on with the prices there... I just wanna know what a "nearly failing headgasket" is and a "nearly failing gearbox"??? More details? To replace headgasket, will cost you $80-$400 depending on whether you do the work yourself or not and if your head needs to be shaved...
And yeha, the n13 is nice, but if you want speed on a budget - n12 all the way!

nearly failing gear box well fifth gear pops out under the slighest push on the accelerator.
head gasket i am not sure but i think it is failing coz coolant is leaking from near the water pump n coolant leaks like drip drip drip gotta fill up the radiator EVERY DAY.
and starter motor 70% of the time screeches when i turn the key.
how do you know if the head is warped? and if it is, do i need a new one? or can the existing one be reconditioned some how?

ive got the solution... Go N13! with a CA18DET.... with FMI.... hehehe... but i must admit a guy over here... a friend of a friend... ummm... hade a N12 and added another turbo so it was a 1.5L TT... and man that thing was capable of big speed... and it was 1/4 miled at 12-13's... i could b wrong but i remember it been insanely fast....

Hehe I am the friend and it was my mate’s girlfriend’s car. That's right guys and gals his girlfriend she is a total rev head, it was her idea to install the extra turbo.
I can't remember the exact numbers but the car did boot.

ok, a full vrs kit is around $100 this includes all the gaskets you will need. To get the head skimmed is around $70 so you will expect less than $200. if you change a head gasket you should always have the head skimmed, this will tell you if the head is warped. usually slight warping can be machined off, if it is major they can heat and press the head flat in some cases, but usually you need a new head. i did my full reco for around a grand with new pistons and full balance etc so it wont be too dear.
gearbox try a few different oils, i found this helped in both my exa and my mates.
the ring hear problem is a pretty simple fix, either get a new flywheel or go to a wreckers and buy an na flywheel, heat the ring and knock it off the na wheel, then heat it and knock it onto the turbo flywheel. Problem solved. should cost no more than $50
the above is assuming you do the work yourself of course.
either way you look at it moding an exa will need $$ but you already have the n12 so y not stick with it.
pffftttt....N13 :mafia:

ir really depends what you want out of the car, if u want a fast car, and dont mind it when people call it ugly, an n12 is i great starting point.
if u want a summer cruiser which is also quick and looks damn sexy, go n13 :trippa:
