Ok, found out where the squeaking was coming from my gearbox.. The linkages are worn out... my mech told me it would cost around $200 to fix... How does this sound? Do u have to remove the entire gearbox to fix it, or can u get to it some other way?

WHI55L, I replaced mine for around $70 in parts (nissan).... basically it means replacing the gearstick harness (has a thick rubber bush which supports the stick itself) and retightening the bolts on the support rod. Shouldn't need to do anything else unless you find something obviously worn or broken (only a a few bushes in there which could be worn but thats about it). If you can still change gears fine then the support rod hasn't broken off the rear engine mount (common prob after that rubber wears out) so you can leave it all in there. Probably take about 1 to 2 hours at most.
You only need to remove the rear engine mount to front chassis brace (about 1m long), and your exhaust from the catalytic converter (2 bolts at the cat flange & unhook the rest up to the muffler). Then there are 4 screws securing a guard plate & your gearbox linkages are right in front of you.
It might only be that the ball joint on the gearstick needs some more grease, so pull the stick out completely and see if its dry (should be nice and greasy - I repacked mine to be on the safe side when I had it out, feels smoother too).

ok.. we looked at the linkages 2day and they seem fine....
Ive noticed lately as well that my gearbox gets really hot, u can actually feel the heat through the plastic centre console....
What else would it be?? Could it be that gearbox fluid could be low causing too much friction, but then i guess it would be harder to shift, which it isnt....
Has anyone experienced this squeaking noise b4? both me and my mech are stumped?!?!!?

The squeaking sound *might* be the gearstick harness rubber (snapped and the edges are rubbing together). Pretty hard to diagnose when u just say it 'comes from the gearbox', when does it do this? is it louder from the engine bay with the bonnet up? does it seem like its where the gearstick is? only when car is running or moving?
The extra heat you are noticing is from your car running warmer rather than your gearbox having problems. The centre console sits directly over where the exhaust pipe hangs (with some chassis in between). This could be due to your engine having problems, the weather, or just how you are driving it. I've always found if my car is running well I have very little to a slight warm heat, but if its hot (and not a really hot day) then there are problems (usually air/fuel/timing related).
Just a few extra things I thought of. The squeaking could be a rusty gear return spring? (the lil spring which centres the neutral gearstick position in the selector). Or any chance it could be your seat or seat mounts?

cheers Lonx,
Problem was there was a bolt that sheered off the front gearbox.. replaced it with another one, all is sweet...

Ahhhh........ a sheered bolt off the front of the gearbox huh? been there, done that, many times, last time it happened, it snapped the bolt off inside the threaded gearbox casing, ouch. Took a bastard long time to get it out!
Good to hear she's all fixed.
