hi guys i dunno anything about ECus so hope you guys can help me out here.
Whats the cheapest ECU that works with no hassles? andhow much? (apart from the stock one of course).
and do they require additoinal sensors n stuff?
and what kind of setup would benefit from an ECU?
and how would i go about putting in distributorless ignition?

ask chris2 im sure he has setup a distributorless setup in a et. the cheapest ecu would probably be a second hand microtech or wolf although the wolf needs mods to the dizzy to work.
as for sensors they should come with it like map sensors with the microtech.

Hey,
na - chris2 has a distributor equipped Exa... However, we have been toying with the idae of swapping ti to coils, but never got around to it yet... It can be done with most aftermarket ecus, just a bit of planning involved...

i spoke to vince rigoli about distributorless ignition, using a setup similar to chris's fulii.
Basically he said the power to money ratio was shit, there would be bugger all power gain compared to upgrading to a better single coil.
a simple setup is to use vn/vs commodore twin point coils with camira ignitors, these can be picked up cheap as at a wreckers.
use two coils, and put them on alternate cylinders, so they each fire 2 cylinders at any 1 time, the first cyl is the primary and is the one that is finishing its compression stroke and entering the power stroke, at the same time it fires the cylinder that is reaching its exhaust stroke.
It works like a waste spark, and some factory cars actually do this to clean up the emissions eg toyota 3tgteu.
sorry its hard to explain the concept without pointing and showing first hand.
you would still require the dizzy as it has the crank angle sensor inside, but the cap and rotor can be removed, and blanked off.
we set this up on my mates celica, only we took the dizzy right out and fitted a cas on the front pulley, cost him a fair bit for coils and ignitors, plus all the rigmoroll of setting it up, and there was pretty much no noticeable difference, he basically was just able to run a slightly colder plug (he went from a bp8 to a bp9)

So ah, how much would a 2nd hand microtech be? and so with the microtech, thered be less hassle? no need to muck around with the dizzy?
basically i want to make my car reasonably fast with the t25 and at the same time worry less about reliability of moving parts. basically bring it more up to date.

oh yeah, and with the simple vn/vs commodore setup,
i need:
2 coils
1 camira ignitor
and how do i wire them up?

Oh sorry for the multiple messages,
any Japanese maker ECUs able to be used
instead of say the Microtech? for example,
HKS, Apexi ECUs

you need 2 coils and 2 ignitors.
i am not sure how they would be hooked up witha microtech, my mate had haltech, and it was simply hooked up by connecting an output of tthe computer to it, and setting the computer to multi coil mode.
when you look at a second hand microtech, consider that your costs wont stop there.
you may think 500 is cheap for a second hand unit, but then you need to buy a loom with all the sensors, 300, fitting, 300, tuning 150... which equates to probably around 1300.
for 1300 you can get a brand new ems stinger installed and tuned, and even possibly a new microtech.
second hand isnt really a cheaper alternative unless you can install yourself.
(the prices are onlly a guestimate, it may be dearer/cheaper)
