View Full Version : option for 3 letter keywords in search

This might have been suggested already, but i think it would be a good idea to have an option to search for three letter keywords as well. Normally if its under four letters u cant search that word, so if ur looking for threads on tps or cas (throttle position sensor and crank angle sensor) and if they dont actually spell it out its hard to find stuff. So maybe a little box that u can check saying "include three letter keywords". Could make a few things easier to find. What do you think....

I tried enabling this a while back, but had a lot of trouble getting it to work...

So if anyone here is fluent in mySQL server settings, and knows how to change the fulltext search amount to 3 easily, lemme know! ;)

i assume its not phpmyadmin... check your search.php of this forum and change setting of slq then it should be working

i suggest disable stupid word limits.

nope, vBulletin has an option to either use it's own database, or use mySQL's fulltext search... I chose the latter, as it saves us about 200 meg webspace! ;) Only problem is, to allow 3 letter words, I need to change that server setting, and every time I've tried in the past, I've almost crashed the damn thing...

thats not true about you save 200 meg webspace... BUT you might mean bandwidth... but not big deal :? at this time... we have good server plus fast connection

i believe vb make better search feature ( but might not make a good database for search as phpbb or ip) than phpbb or ip... vb has a common problem when use less than 3 words... as you said :rolls eyes:

other opition... make a little nice html search on your main page. ( i mean use google.ca + search at nissanexa.com only ~ for example http://geocities.com/lihtan/search.html)

if you want a best quality paid forum... i would suggest ubb

No, vB has far better features, always has... We used to use ubb, and upgraded to vB.

As for the search database, ours was at 140MB when I deleted it and reverted to fulltext mySQL search. This was over a year ago, so now it would be close to 200MB if we still had it. Having that searchindex table basically makes your entire database 150% bigger.

All I need to do to make fulltext search 3 letter words is to change one little setting... but I keep breaking it every time I do... not vB's fault at all...

hmm would be nice if someone could change it, i had a biotch of a time trying to find air con threads... lol cause no one ever says air conditioning, and both words are 3 letters i had to come up with all other stupid things to search for like "condenser"

(Old thread, I know....)

If you want to search for a 3 letter phrase, use a wild card.
ie, instead of AFM use AFM*
