I recently rebuilt the whole engine.
After having it re-registered it died a day latter. Turned out the harmonic balancer key got sheared off. Tried replacing it same thing happened again.
In the end I pulled off the timing gear. In the workshop manual it shows a metal plate going between the gear and harmonic balancer which didn't fit there because of the key so I didn't put it in when i rebuilt. I eventually worked out that the plate goes between the gear and the block, thus pusing the gear out so that the key goes in the hole properly! nice one nissan.
Although I'm not entirely sure that it was where its supposed to go because after getting it all back together it caused alot of rattling/rubbing noises. It could just be the out of balance harmonic.....
Anyone know how its meant to be put back together?
