Will they sit happily enough on the doorskin or is some serious mounting required to keep them secure??

Some cars, usually higher end ones, have fairly 'meaty' door skins which a pod can be secured to quite nicely.
An N12?, no, you're going to have to go into metal, otherwise you'll get shocking vibrations and a bad quality seal around the edges.
Worst case scenario, the woofer is really heavy and actually pulls the pod off the door when you go over a pothole or something.
A good install is definitely worth the extra effort.
Generally a $100 set of speakers installed correctly will sound better than a $300 set thrown in with no thought.

put some nice chunky screws into the pod thru the skin from behind.
