Over the christmas break i am planning on attempting the ambitious task of constructing a replacement boot for my n13 exa. It will be the opposite of a sportsbak in that it will reduce the side profile of my car not increase it.

I am thinking of an appearance along the lines of how the car looks with the standard boot detatched.. but with a hard cover from the rear of the car right through to the back of the front seats. The back bench seat will need to be folded down making the car a dedicated 2 seater, but with increased luggage space. I am thinking along the lines of a late-model h*onda crx (or del sol for u yanks).

The whole point of this is to have the benefits of driving with the targas and rear hatch off (like improved wind flow), yet with the weather-proof, security and aesthetic improvements of having a permanent cover (unlike the tonneau back). I aim to plan it and make it LOOK all professional even though it will be a backyard job, so it wont be rice-ey. I am studying product design at uni.

In summary.. the exa will then look like a 2 seater roadster but with a roll bar in the shape of a T. And the conversion can be taken off when desired (like winter) as easily as the factory boot.

From the top it will look like this: front { [-| ] back

Anyone interested, and does anyone have any advice or suggestions, or would you like to help out???

Thanks to craig you can all now see the first stage of the project....

This is just the base skin before i make the flanges to seal the edges and the detailing on the upper surfaces including aero blisters (like on the renault megane roadbox accessory and the holden design utester concept)

i think that sounds like an awesome idea and i think it could look really sweet. I hope your back yard job does your idea justice cause it could be really phat. What are you thinking of for the vertical part behind the headrests of the front seats? like the glass window from the del sol? or something removable? and i'd be interested in knowing what you are planning on doing for the insides of the small triangle side mirrors that will be jutting out. You planning on wrapping the back on the inside of them too? good luck. you better be ready to mass produce if it looks sweet hehehehe

So far i'm thinking of leaving the gap there... The whole point of this exercise is to end up with the summer-time advantages of removing your boot, but without the effect of your car looking like a ute!! (or pick-up for everyone outside australia ) However there is always the opportunity to add a clip-on rear section for extra security when you park it for extended periods of time..

try a tent repair joint, there are a few around, but i don't know what they are called, they will have contacts to be able to get heavey dutie stuff like the neoprene, or similar stuff, or you could try calling the ripcurl factory and find out where they buy their neoprene, or even if they make them in aus, maybe you could buy some scrap of them. If you want i could try to find the number of the local tent repairer, i was in scouts and my dad usta get the tents repaired in a place local to me ( fern tree gully/ boronia area) they had heaps of fabrics an stuff there, that might do the trick.

Hope i've helped

Thanks paddy, will do!

I need it for the seals along the edge... So far for the prototype i have made the framework and the skin as you can see in the above photo, plus i've added the finish that goes around the outside edges. All thats left to do before painting is make the aero bubble thingos and the endpiece for the cabin interior which will allow access to the boot, plus the latches holding it all securely...

Well the point is that its only used when its nice and sunny, like the same times you would have your targas off, or for the more ambitious of you, when you take your boot off anyway. It is primarily an aesthetic modification so when it starts raining again you can swap it back. Because i'm in melbourne though that could happen at anytime the same day!!! Therefore it will be as water resistant as possible, and the front edge of the thing sits below the roofline meaning not much water will get in anyway if you chuck your targas on...
I do see your point so i'll probably make a cover that you can clip in if you're stuck out in a storm, to keep you dry.

Hehe sounds cool man cant wait 2 see the end product!!! im 2 lazy 2 figure out how 2 take the rear hatch off and also too lazy 2 find a plae 2 store it while im out hahahaha theyr so damn heavy!!!!! thats something u may also need to think about, on an EXA the rear hatch is built damn heavy so that when u take the targas off the weight of the car isnt stuffed up.... so maybe have a think about that so yuor car doesnt stand on its nose when u start 2 drive it..... thats what i was told anywayz, but if thats right then how come the hatch is removable? im lost hahahaha

I think it's so heavy because of the glass of the rear window is quite thick, not for any stability reasons. As you said the car was designed primarily so the roof and hatch can be easily removed, so the weight of these would not be essential for handling or even structural purposes.

I can lift the hatch by myself with no problems but I need plenty of space to move around as it is quite awkward to manouver, and we cant have the paint getting damaged!! It helps to hold it by the centre of the cars axis.. ie: one hand halfway between the hinges and the other where the spoiler brake light is. However your arms might be shorter than mine!!

Well my head comes in useful for holding up the boot (when i undo the struts to take the hatch off), although it messes up your hair if its spiky!!

not that this is genius or anything.... but i just have part of a broom stick that is the right length to prop the trunk open.....

and in case your wondering i just stick it in there after i have taken off the plastic lids, undo the struts and leave one bolt just barely on each side.... then just becareful lifting it of as you take the bolts of the last thread. The broom stick should just fall into the trunk (or boot heheh)

Okay the paint should be dry by tomorrow morning and all i need now is to attach the fasteners and it'll be done. I might bring it on sunday's melbourne meet and you can see it then - depending on the weather of course! It looks a bit different to the drawing above cos i havent made the aero blisters yet.

Read further up near the top Jason! At the moment its just for summer - basically the times when you'd take off your hatch anyway - but there is a possibility of putting something there. I've designed it to all be modular.

Okay time for another update! I went to the wreckers today for a boot pin but the ones I could find (pintara and bluebird wagons being the most similar) weren't very suitable. Anyway I took a quick stroll around Bunnings and came out with a few bolts and doo-hickies which seem to do the trick! That means the project is back on track after Sundays' hiccups!

Oh yeah I also need a name to distinguish it from the normal hatch, the SportBak & the SoftBak. How about SunBak, or FunBak, FlatBak, AeroBak, WindBak, SummerBak, DriftBak, LiteBak 9000 ?? ?? ?? Hehehe, come on guys I know at least some of you are creative!!!

Matt has good idea. I like it.

Al right back to bodykits, my name is sash for d guy who asked.

Anything that seems alright for all of uz is ok for me, i can make anything, but i have to start with final drowing, and do first shapes looking at it than comes mould, so i cant just put anything uz like later, i can but too much time.

When you have final drowing and 10 ppl intersted for buying it send me pic to my mail.

soon i will post d pics of front bar of suzuki that i made.

thanks guys keep it up.

Yeah well I was thinking of that benefit too!! Cos we all know how much the boot weighs... and by reducing that weight, without increasing aerodynamic drag, you will have increased the cars power/weight ratio!!! Plus, when people see it in the street they will go WTF is it??!! Hehe stealth import racer

Okay stage 1 is complete!!! If you haven't been keeping up with the news, that means it is all done (like the sketch on page one) except for the bubble thingos on the back. So yeah you can see the pics at the top of this page to get an idea of the current look.

The results are pretty good. It passed the Chapel Street test last night, which meant I was cruising down the road and got heaps of looks and comments - without people laughing at me!! It also passed the freeway test. ie: it didn't come flying off at 100 km/h!!!

Now for the name of this boot attachment... Thanks everyone for your suggestions, keep 'em coming. I think I'll add a name deciding poll in whats new just to get peoples interest up. If you want it can be moved back to style but yeah.. What about Nissan Exa Roadster??

It's a great idea, but to me it look's just a little plain. Like if it had a lift up part at the back, slight curved incline and maybe a little spoiler or something it would have more pizaz and machizmo.

Okay boys and girls, time for another spiel...

NEWBIE: It is held in place by hook-like-things under the bar that is behind the back seat, a u-bolt into the standard latch mechanism (which means it is locked down until you use the key), and a torsion bar that keeps the corners from lifting. I'll post some pics soon of the underside of each panel, and a step-by-step walkthrough of whats involved with making the boot, and how it is attached to the car. It's quite complicated cos it had to be made in two halves in order to fit the panels between the 'c-pillars'.

EXATERRESTRIAL: I'll start on the aero blisters soon, once i decide on the best construction method. As much as I'd like it to be a one off, nobody ever achieved anything without the inspiration and guidance from others... I'll post some instructions as soon as i get a chance to put something together that you'll all understand. I mean thats what clubs like this are for, right??!! Sharing stuff.
You have to remember though that this is a first for me and for the car as far as i know, so i made it up as I went. At least my engineering subjects came in handy!! If I started again there are heaps of things I'd do differently so its definitely not perfect. As for making it for other people - as much as I'd love the cash - it's taken me a couple of weeks working on it here and there so I can imagine going crazy after the first few were finished!!

NO EXA: That was my thought EXActly when I first came up with the idea, so thats why I added the black bar that you can see in the photos, plus why I designed the whole aero section behind the seats like in the sketches. I knew that they would be the hardest and most time-consuming parts to make, hence the reason behind making them last. It's ok though because I can still use the flat part in the meantime. After that I'll have a crack at making a small-height aluminium spoiler... I guess the whole almost-flat look does suit the era though.

::: Thanks again everyone for your time and comments, you've all been inspiring and encouraging :::

Ok now I am working on the deisgn of a low profile spoiler, similar in size to the stock hatch one.. Oh yeah I have added aluminium trim highlights and race pedals to the interior too! It really spices things up the inside. I should be getting some new mags after christmas too to really complete the look.

Hey I was driving down Chapel Street (again!) on Saturday with the AeroBak on, and I passed the sickest Lambo Diablo parked on the side of the road. The driver was there with his mates and i'm driving past with my RnB pumpin' - get this, he stops and stares and goes "what the fuck??"!!!! Hahaha! This dude was a fat rich bloke and he was impressed by backyard styles!!! I was thinking.. "hey dude i'll swap you the Lambo for my sick beast!"

Well rhys (gts18exa) just asked me how much the thing weighs so i went and weighed my new boot.. as you do. I got a reading of 5 kg per half... thats 10 kg total!!!! I'm about to take off the stock boot now and weigh that so I'll let you know in a jiffy the result. I'm guessing it weighs heaps, so there should be a huge difference in handling.. and takeoff

I don't know how in the world I missed this thread, but I really want to tell you how awesome an idea that is, I would be VEEEEERRRRYYYY interested in the plans of how that was made, or if youre willing to fab more of these up.... only thing I'm worried about is will that panel come out at 100+ mph? The old SR20DET has the power to get this little exa (pulsar) well beyond 130mph...

I want updates! BTW, I probably missed it in the post, but was there a reason to make it a 2 piece panel?

Matt
2nd January 2003, 01:57 PM
Thanks b00st... i think this one got lost last week when all of the threads disappeared.. :(

Well the whole thing is held on at the back with a U bolt going through the standard boot lock point, and the front is clipped under the bar that's behind the rear seat. Torsion bars underneath stop the corners flapping! This setup is good for at least 150 km/h

I made it in two halves firstly cos its so damn big, and secondly to allow it to fit snugly around the c-pillars. I already have a heap of improvements regarding choice of materials, configuration, security, and water resistance; that I can use in the second version.

Oh yeah, I still haven't had time to make the aero bubbles yet cos I've been working and sleeping too much :p

There was a post a ways up there and it asked what the exa would look like without out the side windows... Well I am actually already in the process of putting plexiglass there and I will be bondoing (real word?) over the windows and painting them to match the car. I will be done with them in about two weeks and then I'll post pics. I have one off and fiberglass shell there that's painted and it looks sick - can't wait to finish...

By the way matt - you should get an old hatch - remove the glass and extra stuff and build a window vertically from behind the seats. Just an idea (like the new del-sol-crx)

Matt

It will be built in a number of pieces for ease of transport, storage and practicality: The front half can be removed (and stowed in the boot area in 2 pieces) leaving just the back half, if you need to carry extra passengers. This offers the practicality of 4 seats but still gives the wind-in-the-hair effect. When you drop off your passengers you can put the front half on again. Alternatively just the front half can be used with the normal hatch to have a two seater look in winter!

As for styling I will keep the original lines of the car but make it a little more aggressive :madshake:

Well thats the plan guys I'll let you know how things are progressing... :D

I have thought of making a third piece to cover up the rubber strip around the roll bar, and also include a high mount stop light. This part will kind of look like those HSV Maloo utes. Also i need to work out some way to cover the opening for that extra security when parking in the ghetto!

Well guys the day has come... I have aquired some more materials and construction on the production AeroBak (as opposed to the concept prototype I made before Christmas) has commenced!!

The design has changed slightly from the sketch above, however the concept of the front and back halves will remain. The big difference is the use of more aggressive proportions, and detailing. This i think will help to make the car look a bit sportier and also reduce the door-wedge factor :D

As I build it other details may change if i notice something not going to plan, or if something doesnt look right...

Anyways I just thought those of you who have been following this project will be pleased to know that it is indeed going ahead and will be definitely ready for our spring - and perfect cruising weather :)

hey matt i reckon if your going to all the trouble of making that sick ass cover for the back all mould and that.

Y not make it convertable. included ur mould and chop the door sills and turrets. restrength a few things here and there maybe draw up a pic see what u think anyway.

Just for an idea anyway man. Might give u an idea for some more crazy modifciations.

anyway have a good one

Matt
24th June 2003, 09:22 PM
Yeah good idea man a full convertible n13 exa would be the shit! Only problem is i love my car too much to start hacking away at its pristine body!! Also I dont have enough $$$ to get it done properly and engineered and insured etc. On the other hand having done product design for a couple of years at uni i CAN come up with some concepts of a chopped exa if anyone is interested...

However the beauty of the Aerobak is that it can be put on any exa and only takes like 5-10 minutes to do the swap!

You get all of the benefits of open air cruising, (plus the added security and looks of having a cover over your boot area and/or rear seat) without having to modify your car in any way. As far as the authorities and insurance is concerned it is a basic accessory.

Android 360
26th June 2003, 09:15 PM
uh.. have u actually taken off the inside of the roof and seen how much strenghthening is in the roll bar???

there are many many layers of metal, it u took that off, the exa would wobble like jelly in a paint mixer, there is no way u could strenghthen the car enough and still have enough room put in the seats.... unles u decided to go mclaren style and have 1 seat in the middle...

Matt
4th July 2003, 08:46 PM
Still working on the pattern / buck. I also have some more drawings of the design to scan in for you guys. I have drawn a few different views to give an idea of its form. Should be up tomorrow night after i finish work :)

I have also come up with a system for holding it securely to the car, but I will worry about the details of that when the panels are complete.

Ok guys a couple of things... :)

Firstly, thanks for all of your support. I'm amazed at how much interest this project has brought about!

As you know I've been working heaps lately but now i have a few hours less per week which means more time for my car! This last week has been pretty big for me, with my starter motor needing to be reco'd and also my wheels finally arriving and being fitted onto my car. It looks freakin mad - white wheels are fairly common in melb. but not on red cars... I get sooo many stares! It now looks like the old r31 skyline GTS in a way. Then next week i'm getting a workshop service done, to fix all the stuff i cant do myself such as a dud idle etc.

Anyway I've got the design and concept of the whole AeroBak thing finalised, and also the mould partway completed. All that is left to do is fibreglass the bastard and then sand sand sand. I will practice by making a replacement grille and maybe some other little thingys first before tackling the big project. My biggest stumbling block is not having had weekends free but this coming sunday i have off!

I have some pictures which I will try and scan in as soon as i can, to give you all an idea of where im taking my car. Most of my mods so far have not been permanent (in that it can all go back to stock if i wanted) and if i do the same for my body enhancements then i feel it would appeal to more people in the club. That way people can install them themselves... Believe it or not some of my biggest inspiration for my bodykit design has come from the HDT VL Commodore Brock Director (minus the crazy wheel arches) in addition to the R31 Skyline GTS and R32 Skyline GTS-T. For the AeroBak itself, the Holden Utester convertible VU ute concept, Renault Megane cabriolet, and Vauxhall VX220 turbo have provided some design ideas too.

I know i said it would be ready by now (spring) but i never anticipated working 45 hour weeks (and then spending all the cash LOL)... Finally getting my wheels plus the associated looks from them, and the mad weather we've had down here lately, has made me realise i owe it to myself and to you guys who have supported me to get it done.

Thanks everyone, and I hope it turns out as unreal as we can all envisage it to be

Hey matt if you get a real Areoback done resembling those bad ass drawings of yours I wouldn't even think twice about paying you $300-$400 dollars for one. It would have to be made out of plexiglass or fiberglass though. I would suggest getting it made out of pleiglass, for one it's cheaper cost and two it is much much lighter. This is an awsome idea. Now only if I was rich so I could get one made out of carbon fiber. Man this is going to be huge for you if you finish it, I bet every Pulsar owner will want one. At $300 a pop, thats like ....., a shit load of money!! :king:

T3KN!K4L 2NR
26th October 2003, 01:56 PM
Plexiglass? Plexiglass would be lighter, but if you bag the fiberglass, you can cut down on it's weight by about 40%.. If you use the proper honeycomb you can cut the weight some more... I personaly like using aluminum honeycomb... Plus pieces that big would warp and bend to easily...

How much are you going to sell them for? Are you making the origonal out of would and than having a mould made of it. That would be the smartest:shades: . Need some backing money... I would send in a few bucks and I bet most of the other members would send in five to ten bucks. Or maybe I'm just over-generous...So what do you guys say?? I think this could be one of the biggest things to happen to Pulsars since the CA18DET swap.

I was thinking.... what about putting a vertical trunk lift kit on the back part of the Areoback. Then you could take out the big plastic cover for the spare tire and take the spare tire out and put a beast of a system down there. Sounds like a lot of work but it would be the best. I don't suggest this for everyone but I'm going to when Matt finishes his AreoBack.:flashsmil You'd need to do a lot of custom work to make an inclosure for two or three subs, and place the amps on the sides. Does anyone have any ideas for what you would use to cover up the sides where it's just metal down there. Matching carpet from the rest of the car maybe? I don't know. But I don't what to start untill a certian someone finishes with a certian somthing, and I won't say any names *cough* matt . Excuse me. well hope its coming along well for you. And if you need any help, you know who to ask. Peace Out:amigo:

Hey matt,
You said you were changing the design from the before posted drawing. Think you could post a pic of the new design? or that and current progress shots? Well unless you've got it finished i mean :P

Hell if it turns out good, (after i get an EXA of course) I might buy one of you and get a custom rear window done to make it a permanant back :P but still with the removability so you can put the stock one on when you need a bit more boot space or wanna sell it... *shrug*

Sorry guys I've been very busy lately and haven't been on Exaclub for a while... :bawler2:

While this project WAS put on hold for a while for various reasons i won't bore you with, construction IS still going ahead. To anyone else who wants to have a go at making their own version (as I have seen) please feel free to try. I will be putting up more sketches shortly with the new design I have developed.

To put things into context, here is a photo of my car as it looks currently:

And (drumroll please!) here is just a teaser to give you an idea of part of the Aerobak's development:

No offence man.. but before and after shots are usually more useful if they're taken from the same angle..

Congrats on the progress though.

Can someone please explain to me though the benefits of having such an open air thing at the back of the car??

crewwolfy
10th February 2004, 12:41 AM
Probably less turbulence when the tops are down, or even when the windows are open. Try driving around without the back on at all, that's what it'd be like. I haven't tried that myself, so I don't know. And I won't know for a while, because it's 20 degrees here...

crewwolfy

Diego V
10th February 2004, 03:08 AM
I aploligize matt for any offence....... I really love your idea and the Aerobak prodject and I personally think that it is one of the most radical and eye-catching part that an EXA has ever graced upon. I thought that you had given up it and would of never suggested anyone else do it, if I had known of your continued intrest in it. If you need any help I'm your commrade in arms in this..... I will change my post about other people doing it. I only did it so that it wouldn't be forgotten when I thought you had dropped it.... Best wishes and luck mi amigo....

Matt
10th February 2004, 04:28 PM
Nah its all good I've got plenty of people laying the boot in to get me to hurry up!

Oh yeah just to repeat what I said a few pages earlier, a lot of turbulence and wind drag occurs when air coming through the roof and/or open windows builds up against the back window. By effectively removing the rear window (something that owners of CRX Del-Sols needn't worry about!) the air may flow freely, marginally increasing performance and economy.

Has anyone weighed their hatches?? The standard hatch weighs over 20kgs whilst the Aerobak will weigh much less than that. This weight is in the back of the car so removing it won't reduce traction, but will increase the power/weight ratio. The designers of the Exa were well ahead of their time in designing a car in this modular fashion, but now I am exploiting this feature to its fullest.

Finally the car with its boot off and its seals visible looks strange in my opinion, so it will clean the look of the car up and pretty much make it look more complete.

Matt.... 12 days now,no word....... any more progress... looks like you are on your way to start the mold..... are you planing on making it like your second version? What material are you planning on making it out of?....fiberglass??
are you still making it in three parts?? is it going to hold in place by the bar on the rear seats?.... does it go past the rear seats..... can the seats be up with the Areobak in... can people sit in the rear seats with it in?..... Have you seen the split hood kits where you can open your hood in the middle and it opens half to the right and half to the left. I was thinking that if you were still doing it in three parts I thought that you could make it open in the middle and have some killer subs/amps/neons underneath..... it would be killer... any updates on your plans..... peace out!!

Here we go kids! This diagram should be fairly self explanatory...

http://www.quik.com.au/~mattb/AerobakSketch2.jpg

Here is a quick rundown of the concept...

-> The red bit is attached to the car using the normal hinges and also attaches to the orange bit.
-> The orange bit attaches to the car using the normal latch and also hooks onto the bar on the back of the rear seat.
-> The dark blue bit attaches to the orange bit and also to the inside of the car. This can also be removed and stored when you want to take passengers in the back.
-> The light blue bit is clear plastic and can be un-rolled and used as a window if you get caught in the rain. The top and sides of this window are elastic and hook over the standard hatch weather seal where the c-pillars are. The bottom of the window is a rubber strip to stop water from running in under it.
-> The whole assembly can be installed on any n13 exa in under 10 mins with no modifications required.

Thanks to Trav [Kameleon] who has lent me a spare hatch (to mould the red bit from), i can start on the next stage of construction in the coming week.

hmmm. I think your concept is great!! Personally I would like to own that peice. At the same time I like the sport wagon piece as well. I like both peices....

As for help that you axed for... What about this: Buy another rear hatch... take out the rear glass window... Dont split the hatch in the middle... Instead just add the rest of the fiberglass (or plastic whatever).... to the end of the trunk lid and extend it to the back of the seats... does that make sence?

Cause if you did it your original design, you would lose that colour coded edge around the quarter glass. With an open glassles hatch, you keep the edge around the quarter glass keeping the car and youl have less work!!

oh ooops!!! you already thought of that! Never mind......

Thats exactly what I've done :D

What would really be cool would be if If the back is extended all the way right up to the back of the front seats, and then a pull-out section were added to the back where you could extend the back maybe 3 feet. Then you could get a a matress and put it on top of the aeroback and camp in (or on?) it.

Yeah!

Matt

You can already sleep inside the car if u fold down all of the seats. Not too comfortable though... Build yourself a CampBak ;) if you dont want to smack your head on the hatch when u wake up...

Actually, I've found that with the right size boards and a few plastic egg crates, you can remove the front passenger seat and the bar that goes behind the back seat, then lay the back seat down, then lay the crates on the floor (NOT ON THE COMPUTER!!) and lay the boards on top of them and on top of the back seat you really can have a place to lay down and sleep. Your head would be up by the glove compartment and your feet in the back.

Just another great thing we can do with our cars that most of the rest of the world can't!

I have never seen this idea before until now. I have to say it's a very cool idea if it turns out EXACTLY like this sketch:

http://www.quik.com.au/~mattb/AerobakSketch.jpg

It would be even cooler if there was some way to make it with an actual window that could be rolled up and down. Obviously that makes the modification permanent though. Maybe some kind of netting up behind the seats as a "window" would look neat as well although it would only serve for looks. The only real problem is theft deterrence. I guess if you know you will be going to a crappy area then put the regular hatch on before you go. This sketch is a VERY cool idea though. If someone builds one that looks just like it that would be awesome.
