when im driving along my tacho jumps up an extra 500 - 1000 rpm

ie. when im travelling at 1000kph in 5th according to the tacho the engine is sitting on between 3500 - 4000rpm, however the engine note does not change at all, ie doesnt sound like it is revving that hard.

any ideas, or do i just disconnect it and shell out for an external tacho.

Tacho's are very temperamental items there is a wrecker in preston (melb) pm me if you want the address, this wrecker is the only one i use and they have everything. You cant really fix a tacho they are just about throw away items.

sammy im glad you know what i meant, i think i might just save up the cash and get a external tacho, not a monster one, just one that will do the job.

I just was hoping i could get the thing working cos it is sitting on a nismo et dash with white face dials

looks nuts but i can't read my odometer, and trip meter dials cos the dash is front lit, i think i might mount another light into the bottom of the dash

Hey,
I have a spare guage cluster that you could use and put your face on - would still give you the ultra cool nismo style face, with working instruments! Sell it to you cheaper than I bought it for!

my tacho jumps around a lot too, the other day i worked out the problem, however i havent had time to follow it up.
my problem appears to be a poor earth in the stearing column.
how i found that out....
if you have a turbo timer, run the motor on turbo timer, put the steering wheel lock on, and when the tach goes down, twist the steering wheel.
i found my tach would jump back up when i twisted, and down twhen i let go....
so i am guessing a loose wire in the columb.
plus it sometimes drops out when i put the blinker on.

LOL Amen to that Sam! My tacho is up shit creek too Let's just say it has it's good days and it's bad days. Hardly does it ever come on. I could just be driving down the road when suddenly without any warning it will start working, then it eventually drops out, kerplunk! Must be bad earth or something. But hey... i guess the real pro's listens to the engine and plays it by ear. hehe. Sheesh im so full of it today! :help:
