View Full Version : sr20 Spun Bearing - Advice Req.

So in my new car i had set myself a goal to pop the engine eventually (it had a bit of a bottom end knock...) and then drop in a turbo engine. As it would happen i fucked the engine last night (bit sooner than expected ay? lol) spun a bottom end bearing, so until i get more rego (due in october) im looking at just fixing this engine, But was wondering if im able to just replace the bearing shells by dropping the sump? or am i going to have to replace the whole bearing, and once again can i just drop the sump and then deal with it through there? Gonna Be a bitch of a job but unless i can get another engine for a few hundred it'll have to do for a few months :)

I blew my SR after 3 days on the road.
The blew another one yesterday after 3 weeks.


EDIT: Second motor turned out to be a fucked ignition module :)

Probably best of trying the SR20 forums or PGA, lots of hard core techheads there.
(We're more fun here though :p)

you wont be able to replace the bearing on you SR if you just take the sump off. You will have to take the motor out of the car and strip most of it down. It is best to do this to see if anything else is damaged, like the crank, etc.
In the end it is cheaper just to buy another engine and to save yourself the hassle, but then you have to think if that engine you buy is going to be good, like if it is going to only last 6-12 months, etc. You could get a good SR and have nothing wrong with it though for years to come.
But then it could be better to just repair your motor and replace other key items, and if you have the money seeing as though the engine is out maybe put in some forgies.
In the end you have 2 choices:
1. replace the engine with another SR, cheaper option
2. repair your motor and build it tougher, expensive option if you dont have access to cheap parts and labour

someone told me a quick non-perminant fix could be drop the sump and replace the bearing caps/shells?? so i cant do that on sr20's? if not looks like i may be pm'ing you sooner than expected...

well why would you want a quick non-pernament fix? Should do it properly so it wont happen again. You may also have done more damage than just the main bearing, you may have damaged the crank and it may have to get re-balanced.
I would say if you are after a quick fix, i would be replacing it with another de engine until you can afford to go det.
This is just my advice, doesnt mean you have to take it :p

I spun a bearing, sent the crank away to be rebalanced and it was below tolerance.
Took ages to get a new one, because every time I rang someone up I got "yeah, we've got a couple here...... no wait, they're both stuffed".
Something to look forward to.

I was going to buy a DET off gtirsss, but decided to rebuild the DE instead.
It's nearly done, and is going to be SCHWEEEET, but in the end, the DET path may have only been slightly more.

Hows that for irony get rid of the "unreliable" N13 and in 3 days destroy an SR lol. I agree with what was said above - at least pull it down and check for other damage while getting the bearing fixed. G/L with it :)

What are you driving now?

hes got an N14 pulsar now :P

and if you have spun the bottom end bearing, there is an extremely high probability that you have egged your crank, and scoured the big ends.

Haha yea... n14 sss ;) its my fault i destroyed it, already had a bottom end knock (only very slight and a certain rpm) and i flogged the shit out of it haha... diesel on the road = fun.
Well i'll see how it all work out hey? still hoping to boost it soon enough :)

When I bought my old old old N14 SSS, on the way home from buying it (yes, I kid you not) it spun a Big End Bearing and had quite a big bottom end knock.

My boyfriend at the time got 4 new sets of bearing shells (for lack of a better word - 2 half circles for each bearing) dropped the sump, cross member etc (don't remember exactly what he did as at the time I didn't know which was was up when it came to cars) and he did it from the bottom up while the car was on ramps.

Albeit he was a mechanic and yes it was a fiddly job, but it only took him one evening and I had the car back on the road straight away and 20,000 later it was still going strong. I think it'd still be going now had it's new owner not dropped a DET in there...
