Hi all,

I have just bought a 83 Exa a couple of weeks ago for $1500. I thought it was a bargin, but didn't realise how much was wrong with it until I brought it to the mechanic.

Anyway, does anyone know how to fix a couple of things wrong with my car.

The fan doesn't work on 3 setting
The water for the wipers doesn't work anymore.
The horn for the car doesn't work.

All these was fine, untill a couple of days ago.

Do I have to show it to the mechanic or can i fix this myself.

Thanks

the fan settings i might be able to help.
the way they vary the fan speed is through a resistor block, each setting has a seperate coil of wire of a different resistance. over time they burn out or break.
to fix it you can either pull it out and swap it, or to bodgy it up you can pull it out and reconnect the wires, however your fan speeds will be all wrong.

for the water spray, check there is power at the motor, if there is, then you need a new motor, if not, check your fuses.

the horn, check your fuses, check your connections.

Hi,

I am still having trouble fixing the fan, horn and water of the wipers. There are alot of wires.

Anyway, I have another problem (WEEEEEEE).
I have a sun roof (not detactable) and it leaks water.

Anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks

I got more problems.

My headlights dont work, but the plastic screw is bugged and hard to get out.

Does anyone know how to clean and repack the wheel bearings?

Changing the timing belt and the other belts.

Replacing all the CV boots.

I know its alot, but I what to save a bit of money.

Thanks

i have two recomendations,
1. become VERY good friends with a mechanic
2. buy a workshop manual and a beer factory so u can pay mates to work on ur car.

cleaning and repacking bearings is simple, but the front bearings are pressed onto the hub, and u pretty much destroy them getting them off.
bearings are cheap and not worth servicing, if they make noise, buy a new pair, repack them and put them in.

cv boots are simple, depending if it is inner or outer.
one side you can remove the cv by taking off a circlip inside the boot, the other u have to flog off, then replace a c clip.
either way, its not too bad if ur mechanically minded.

timing belt, buy the workshop manual, it will tell you what to do.

what is the plastic screw got to do with ur headlights? is it just low beam that doesnt work, or everything?

if u are stuck on little things like this, you probably shouldnt own an exa, because soon you will need to fit a new gearbox, clutch, motor, starter, alternator........
that said they are a good car to learn off, cause u will pretty much have to fix every part of the car.
buy a workshop manual and have a tinker, thats all i can say

Man Ferndale is a long way south from Scarbs, but if ya still having trouble next year, I can give ya a hand. Im in Japan until July next year, so cant do shit to help.

Ill give ya a bell when I get back home.

By the way, the headlights could be a relau up behind the drivers side light, or some electrical problem at the stalk. I pulled my stalk apart cos the high beams were playing up, found there was a slight layer of rust over the contacts. Rubbed some emery over them and it was like new again, worked great. Get a test light, they are your friend.

yeah, thanks nisman.
i bought the exa to tinker around. thinking to changing into a ute (maybe).

The plastic screw that attaches the casing on the headlights. Sorry my bad. I guess i have to rip it out, because the "slot for the phillips head" is stuff up (i definely got the techincal words down pat.)

Regarding the washer, its not blocked, i hear the motor going, and also it get hot. i guess it mite be the motor itself?

Disconnect the rubber tubing on the washer motor
press the button incabin like you would to get water out of it
if you feel it pushing out air then it aint the motor

could be the rubber tube is blocked or the squirters are blocked

As for your lights, my lights died few weeks ago
highbeam was fine, lowbeam on both headlights was gone

Replace the globes if your highbeam, parkers work

a fairly obvious check is :- Does it have water in it?!!!!

I have just fixed up my headlight. I realise it was really easy, I wanted to dismantile everything (including the plastic screw connected to the black casing).

In regards to the washer, yes there is water and yes the hose is all clear. so dats why I asked about the motor.

I can't hear the motor working but it develops heat (ie is feels warm after a couple of attemps).

So anyone for ideas?

if it produces heat then it is probably rooted, maybe a short across one of the windings.
if it is going, you should hear the motor, they are pretty loud.

i have had to replace litterally every mechanical part in my exa.. it gives me a headache when i work out how much the car owed me.

My bad.

I guess I should stop bitching about the car. I guess I would be able to fix everything in this car, I was wrong.

if only you were in vic, we have a complete n12 exa for wrecking (sell as complete car). it has all the parts you need (and they all work)
