if you are in an emergency braking situation then its very beneficial to be able to retain control of the vehicle whilst slamming your foot on the brake.

For day to day they do nothing.. just like airbags really.

if you've done an advance driver training course or a day on the skidpan then you will know how good they can be, but they are not essential... personally i've never locked up the brakes in any car i've owned/driven, so I don't see much use for it...

I found that the abs on NXR's is very average. ABS on more recent cars sh$ts all over it.
For example if you slam your foot down and abs kicks in, then you take your foot off and reapply pressure you loose a lot of your braking power. I'm not sure how it works, but basically there wasn't much development in abs back in the early 90's so NXR's got a very average version of it.

Ive never had an airbag deploy in any cars I've driven... should I get a car with no airbags?

The Idea behind ABS is to give you control under braking.

99.999999999999999999999% of your life you will never really notice or need it... but that 0.0000000000000000001% of your life when you fall asleep and your car is headed for a tree, or a child runs into the road after a ball is when ABS could mean the difference between a heart attack and minor damage, or losing a life.

the abs on nxr's is a primitive version and doesnt work very well at all. better to spend money upgrading rotors pads lines and calipers than going to the effort of installing experimental abs. only time i ever needed it it locked up on me. most of the guys from america disable it because its actually quite unsafe when it does fuck out on you.....besides what race cars use abs????

I certainly wouldnt suggest going to the trouble of installing it on a non-ABS car either, but that doesn't mean that its not a worthy option on a car already fitted with it.

In terms of race cars - they dont have ABS because firstly, the drivers are supremely skilled at all aspects of driving, their tracks are closed and the possibilities of unexpected emergency braking are minimised, their braking is expected, and therefore managed by the driver into the corner using their skill.
The cars are designed to have high speed impact safety as a number 1 priority, hence control in an emergency situation is prioritised to the driver rather than the car, who unlike mum or dad, have had a lot of experience controlling cars that are spinning out of control or locking up wheels. Also, ABS does increase your stopping distance but with the benefit of control in that distance, in a race situation.. probably not so beneficial... in an emergency situation probably more beneficial.

And yes.. ABS can be quite awkward when it is malfunctioning... My ABS is currently switched off because it has a fault, but there are lots of things in a car that can be dangerous if not properly maintained and promptly repaired.
Again... Airbags... you wouldnt want one of those deploying on the freeway...

On a street car that is used for personal transport there is no possible logical arguement that can be put forward to say that a properly maintained ABS system is not a worthwhile braking component. (on a car already fitted with ABS) Unless you are an idiot and want to kill yourself or someone else if push comes to shove.

i agree abs is awesome in newer cars. as well as other things like esc and tcs. unfortunately the abs in ours is terrible. and hardly comparable to todays braking systems. so if you dont have it dont worry about it, if you do have it and its starting to kick back at you disconect it.
