i was gonna rebuild a E15ET i still got it stripped down in parts in my room, but never finished the project cause of those random jumping poles taking out my car. it all depends on the extent of the rebuild i believe and if your talking trade or retail on prices... trade i'd say you get away with it for under a grand, inc maching the head and gasket and seal kit (non-gen). but all depends if you take the extra effort to go like forgies, strengthened crank, metal head gaskets, etc etc all depends on what you plan on wanting to get out of the engine. but best bet is to ring around a few rebuilders get some quotes then ring around price up some parts work out the difference in prices and decide if you feel confident doing it yourself...

Its probabaly best to use a genunine head gasket unless ur sure the one ur using is good, cause most non genuines fail with a bit of power thrown at them. Nissan make the head gaskets well so they work well.
Rebuilding a motor is a better idea cause u know what the motors like, and when ur down u have a motor that has done 0km's not 50 or 60K.

i spent around $1100 all up for a full rebuild comprising of the following.
bored 20thou and honed $100
rods crack tested
crank crack tested
head crack tested, and fully recod with k-liners and flycut inlet $140
double valve springs $80
full acl gasket kit $500 including pistons, rings and bearings
hypereutectic pistons
full rings, bearings, gudgeon pins, welch plugs.....
stage 3 waggott cam regrind $110
full balance of bottom end, including clutch, front pulley etc $120
3 angle valve grind
all fluids, oil, coolant etc
thats about all i can remember.
me and my dad (who is a mechanic) did all the work, so all prices were trade, and i didnt have to pay for labour.
on the other hand, my mate got a reco, just for a straight set of rings and bearings it cost him $1500

OK when I got my engine rebuilt I didnt know anything, and thinking back, I woulda tried to do it myself. Back then, all up it cost me $3100 for:
std rebuild, new everything including water pump, rebuilt oil pump, hoses, everything!!
balanced bottom end
radiator service
injector service
fluids oils
Seemed a bit expensive at the time, but considering everything was replaced or cleaned, I think it was a fair deal. Others were charging more......if you just do the rings etc ill be a hell of a lot cheaper ;)

3100 is way too much for that, but obviously you are happy with it so i wont rant about how you got ripped.
basically you get what you pay for, if you take the cheapest builder you will have problems, if you take the most expensive, you may still have problems, but at least they should back them up with some warranty.
oil and water pump are only about $70 each new, even less for trade.

Yeh I was thinking its too much, but other places I called were the same, if not more. I think rebuilding these things are more expensive in WA than over east, maybe parts problems or something....?! shrug// Not that I care, it was 4 yrs ago, and the engine is running fine.
