other day couldn't get the old girl going so i just assumed yep thats the battery time for a new one. well grabbed one of the jumper batterys from work and brough that home and started her up and she ran ok put it away in the car port and figured i'll get a new battery on monday. dilema is i go out there today throw the jumper battery on to go up to mates place fine she starts up blows an ass load of smoke and runs disconnect the jumper battery minute later she cuts out so im thinking its the alternator now. well now jumper battery or not she wont start or even attempt the usual clicking noises, no fuel pump or anything. also now my immboliser doesn't arm itself so theres something wierd going on.
would that indicate i have an alternator problem? and its affecting the immbolisor or you reckon the immbolisor is buggered or anyone have any clues? any one got the wiring diagrams for the alternator either like what each wire on the back does...
thanks guys

check your distributor cap. its the black one that your plug leads plug into.
there should be a black graphite looking stick in side it, if it looks all ground out then get a new one, its only 10 bucks or so.

are you refereing to the stick in the center of the cap thats spring mounted??
picture with cap off (http://members.iinet.net.au/~arise/dist_cap.jpg)
dont know if it makes a difference but mines a jap N12 but its got a E15E in it (NA)
i got a spare alternator here that i picked up with the E15ET engine i bought but the plugs and connections for the back are different???

sounds like ur alternator.
if you can get the car running again, the best way to test is to put a multimeter over the battery terminals, if u get 14v then the alternator is charging and fine, if u get less, or even more then the alternator is screwed.
there are two types of plugs on the alternator, but you can quite easily modify the wiring to suit the other, i think its just an earth connector.
just ask the guys you work with, im sure they could help you out.

im pretty sure its the alternator, cause with the jumper battery attached i was able to drive out the drive way and back in (just to turn the car around) but once disconnected it stopped running again.
i'll grab a multimeter and stuff from work tonight and hopefully get someone from work to have a look at it and my spare alternator and sort something out.
or worst case senerio does anyone know if theres a rebuild kit or anything for the alternators? or roughly how much i'd be looking at for a second hand one.

yep ur alternator is dead mate.. is the battery warning light staying on when u manage to start it??
there will be either 2 or 3 wires on the backof the alternator, if u look on the alternator it will say on there which is which.. one is signal which sends the warning light current, one is + and if there is a 3rd it will be -
u can easily modify the wiring to another plug, but make sure u do a very good solder joint and use heat shrink to insulate it well.. if the wires come apart the regulator will die.
to get the alternator reco'd with the bearing, brushes and reg. replaced and a clean up and lathe of the armature it will cost u around 300+ less if ur reg is fine but its best to replace to be on the safe side anyways
(get them to polish the housing on the buffer while they are at it.. they will do it for free...) u will get a warantee too
if u need anything else replaced they will say forget it and get u to order a 2nd hand reco unit or a new one.. get a reco 2nd hand as it will be perfect, new one is a waste of $$ i think. both these alternators will come with a warantee

swapping alternators around is quite easy.. just make sure you buy one thats powerful..
i buy mine from pulsar parts mark there charges me 40 or so which is wicked.

$40 is that with the club disconnect, is that a trade dead for working alternator? trying to see if the wreckers we use at work have any in stock otherwise might try pulsar parts $40 is pretty resonable...
im pretty much guessing the E15ET alternator will be the same as the E15E...
was wierd digging around in the engine bay found the factory boost sender and some other turbo gadgets that were never removed when the turbo & engine blew...
