starter motor / solenoid
Hi
Has anyone here ever removed the starter motor ?
What is the best way to get to it - top/bottom ?
I still have not put an add in the paper to sell my car yet, i've had bits breaking off or dying.... i think it doesn't want to go!
The ignition has started playing up for 1 week now. It started last friday, drove from the coast to browns plains (~60km), pulled up at a video store and it would not start, had to push start it.
It sometimes starts when cold, sometimes starts when hot.
Any idea's ? starter motor? solenoid? any other relays in the system ?
The battery is 2 years old and has an indicator window that is still green (50-100% charge) so it is not flat and the terminals are clean.
I've tried ringing wreckers at about 4.30 but no-one's open.... i hope i can fix this quick. To top it off, the power steerings leaking again.

hey dude
sounds like the brushes inside the starter are gone! They are easy to repair if you're mechanically minded.... Anyway, the most simpliest way to get to the starter is underneath the car....
even more simple is when you get several extensions on your ratchet and make it really long.... cos the rear engine mount will get in the way. Its only 2 X 14mm bolts (i think) and the harness... which i think is a 12mm nut... Make sure you disconnect the negative battery terminal 1st before you start.
good luck

hi again,
Thanks Garry, I was guessing it would be the brushes but I was hoping for an easier fix The last one i changed was on mums tarago, $110 for a recondition a few years ago, i'm hoping the exa is not too much more. I'll get a price for just the brushes as well so you can compare the prices.
You need to get at the bottom and top to get the starter off.
Underneath there is 1 bolt and the 12mm nut on the + lead from the battery, the other bolt is on the top and in the opposite direction. To find the top bolt, look for a bolt holding the main earth lead to the top of the bell housing (underneath the transistor unit), then look just beneath it hidden under the water hose - there's the other bolt for the starter motor .
Also, from underneath, the grey plastic socket for the ignition wire needs to be pried off with a small flat screw driver. Push the screwdriver in between the thin metal strip and the clip and lever up a bit while pulling the socket up (there's 2 small raised plastic pieces holding it on - you'll see it if you use a small mirror and bend the whole socket/metal strip forward a bit).
I opened the back of the starter - 2 brushes are 80%, the other 2 are worn to a nub. I'll post some pics (or a how-to) when the starter is repaired on monday.

damn...you already fixed it...
i was going to tell you what i did to rig mine for about three months-hehe
i used a 4' bar and slid it down behind the motor and would jam the starter solenoid(hit/tap) while turning the key...i am sure it was as funny as sh!t for someone watching me at the mall or something...but it worked and i did that for about three months-hehe
finally no matter how hard i jammed the at the end of it's time it didnt work any more-then i had to replace it...but the key was it worked for a while...i think it was only supposed to be for a bit but it was working so well i just kept doing it-hehe

Hi again, thanks Howie.
Just finished putting everything back together,
works like new, it spins super fast now,
total cost........... $32!
$22 for brushes from a auto electrics spare parts store on the corner of moss street and pacific highway service road (brisbane),
and $10 for an auto electrician to solder two of the brushes on (unit 6 - 547 kessels road).
My starter number is M1T 70985, the M1T is the series number (i think), I was told there are 4 or so different types and the costs vary.
Well that was a fun day and a half, I will try to get the how-to article finished for tomorrow.
Also, I had a good poke around the power steering, the high pressure hose is leaking from the top and running down inside the foam surround, didn't someone here have there's fixed for $130 or so?
