View Full Version : Can a BOV on an N12 make good sound?

When you fit a BOV to the N12, as you need to make sure it's the plumb back style.
I understand the reason for this is because the AFM has measured the air going into the engine and needs to supply the right ratio of fuel.

My question is, can you still get them to make much noise??

I already get a nice little whoosh sound from the T25 on the gear changes without a BOV, but would love to make a little (or a lot) more noise!

Anyone managed to get a nice sound coming from their Exas???
Is a BOV the only way to go???

i had a bov fitted to mine before i blew engine and turbo up.
now, i have new intake pipe and no bov will be fitted for a while :(

it sounded fine, but from my bad experience buy a decent sort of brand name bov as cheap autot*c*n*c* are crap and make shit all sound

mmmmmmmmm, wastegate flutter!!!

How did you get a it to run ok with the AFM?
I thought it had to be a plumback?

I had an atmo on mine, sounded sick, flutter at low boost, bloody loud pshhh at 16psi.

on my 200sx i have a gfb hybrid, this has the plumback fitting on one side, and an atmo trumpet on the other, while its not as loud as a full atmo (pretty bloody close) it still puts half the air into the engine and stops back firing.

THey are not cheap - - over 300 bucks, but u can pick em up 2nd hand for around 170

I've got a GFB mach 1 on mine, even on vacuum i get flutter from my POD.. but i do have a T28  when i had my AFM, u'll prolly only get the generic sounds, but once u get an afermarket ECU and ditch the AFM, she'll rip with the best of em! I get wastegate shriek at 11psi+ sounds awesome!!

Whats the wastegate flutter sound like ?
I recently installed a boost guage and turbosmart boost controller

and i was noticing that even with the boost controller turned all way up it was only going to 8psi

got it checked out and it seems my boost guage is dodgy and is only going to 8psi, but really im running over 1bar boost :/

eeeeek

anyways, back to my question, when it hits 1bar boost (max for my actuator) im getting a huge rattling noise coming from the turbo
im guessing its the wastegate fluttering ?

cheers

sweet 1 bar yeah u have to watch out for those oils seals though i found out the hard way he he (time for the hi flowed t25 :) .....ull know where u hear wastgate flutter its a sweet sound ......i blew a oil seal last week racing a freind and DAMMMM when they go u know about it i think newcastle is till pulutted from my smoke :P anyway i took my BOV of and sold it to a freind but now that ive got a pod on ive got sik wastgate flutter ???dont know how but sounds sweet ;)and im stll running standerd com

:burnout: Ohh ps that rattle wouldnt be ur turbo itll be the engine pinging (witch means that the tappers have reached full extention NOT GOOD...i got that when i took the achuator hose of for a race and id hit like 18psi to 20psi in 3rd one way i got ridd of that for the moment was putting a a bottle of octane boost...but that temp....

the sound you are hearing with tite or no bov is called 'reversion'.

wastegate flutter does not happen when you change gear?
this is when the gate spring is overwhelmed by exhaust gas Flow!

all turbo do it just teh T2 is so small you dont hear it as much...

For the record, wastegate flutter is not really good for your turbo. The sound is the air passing back through the compressor wheel of the turbo in surges. This is one reason to have a bov, to prevent the surging and strain on the turbo.

engine pinging (witch means that the tappers have reached full extention NOT GOOD
Pinging actually has nothing to do with your rockers, actually it is better described by its other name, "pre ignition".
The problem is caused by the air fuel mixture igniting early, usually before the piston is at top dead centre and still on its compression stroke.
This can be cause by excess heat, lean mixtures, high compression, dodgy spark plugs, oil in the a/f mixture and a few other things.
Your tappets will actually reach their maximum two times during each engine revolution, as they are fixed, so it is entirely normal.
(im not trying to be a know all, but hope it helps u)
