i was reading through the service manual on how to replace the timing belt.. sounds insanely complicated... do u really have to hoist the engine out?!?!
anyway i wanted to know if theres a quick, SIMPLE way to check/inspect the timing belt..
i only just bought my exa, and already the aircon belt has snapped, and the alternator belt was perished and about to snap.. so i hope the timing belt isnt in the same condition.

If your other belts are perished there is a better then good chance that your timing belt will need to be replaced. How many Kms has your car done?
I bought my car with about 130,000 Ks on it. At about 170,000 Ks I developed a strange whirring and ticking noise from around the area of the upper timing belt cover. I tried to ignore it for about two weeks while I saved some cash to get some one to look at it. Eventually the noise got bad and the problem developed to the point where I lost compression and the car shuddered uncontrolably under heavy accelleration.
So I did my research and decided to fix it myself. Without access to a proper work shop it is a bitch of a job, but things were worse then I first thought. When I finally got the crank nut and pulley off I discovered that the tensioner pulley had disintergrated. I replaced the pulley and belt retensioned the water pump which is usually also fucked and reassembled the whole thing myself. Great, the job cost around $350 in parts and about two weeks of cold nights in a Canberra shed last winter. The car started first time and I thought all was good. NOT.
In the process of driving my car with no tensioner I bent five valves. So a thousand bucks for gaskets and a head rebuild and another week of cold canberra night in my back yard shed iis back on the road.
Three words- DONT DO IT! If you have any doubt pay someone the $500 bucks for a major service and get that Timing belt changed!
P.S. sorry about the long post

damn :(
well mine doesnt make any bad noises yet.. its got 217,000kms, and had an engine replacement about 15,000kms ago (before i bought it)..
but it wasnt a recon engine - just a used one :(
yeah theres no way i would change it myself - just wanted to know if there was an easy way to check it.. see if it looks cracked/perished, etc...
i'll get it changed asap.

My brother originally bought my car from someone that couldn't get it to run for $390 US. All he did was put in a new timing belt and it ran fine! It took 9 HOURS to figure it out and get it all back together. It's a real hassle. But it was WORTH it!
