just put my cam in yesterday to be reground.
Get it back tomorrow!
Going stage 3, as its a grind it wont quite match the lift of the billets, but Waggot recons he can make it pretty close.

should be sick, and im glad ill finally finish the engine off.
I just gotta hope the mob in sydney has some fj injectors in now.

Hey,
yeah - I got the Waggot stage 3 cam. It is pretty nice, seems to deliver the power nice and smoothly, Ie, you wont break out into wheelspin all the time - just feel a good surge of power come on at around 3300-3500rpm. I got some CA18DET injectors on there way to go into my new custom manifold/plenum chamber. check out the progress I had yesterday in the more speed section. Its getting welded up now, should be finished early next week!

Hey,

That'll be sweet, wish i could afford engine upgrades, oh well, i'll get there, i need FJ20s, i know a mob in sydney that has em, $100 each :D what fuel pump u using?

This is the second waggott cam i will have got, and i was stocked with the last one, so im sure this one will b the same.
I think the only difference you and i have with our motors sam is that you have head porting and a larger turbo and i have double valve springs. What can i say, great minds think alike.....

where is this place with em for $100, are they fj20t ones, and is that 100 for 4??
Ichiban told me 120 for a set but they had none at the time, i live in morebank, so there are like 6 importers within 5 min walk of my house.
If you could give me the importers name it would be a great help.

I have got a vl commadore fuel pump im going to plumb in line, has anyone done this?? will the standard fpr handle the extra fuel pressure or will i need a malpassi rising rate one?

Paul.

Hey,
hehe - yeah I guess they do! I run a VL pump from a surge tank, but member: "chris2" runs a VL inline without any probs...
Only thing tha tI dont like about FJ20 units are that they flow too much for our little motors and dont offer the low down accuracy of the smaller injectors. But its up to you really, I mean, it kinda makes me a bit of a hipocrite (spelling?) with a stage 3 cam talking about compromising low end power.... lol

ok, got the cam, its huge!

38/78 with 280 thou lift, this is equiv to a proper stage 3 and is bigger than what he thought he could get from it.

does anyone know the standard lift?
i think it was 230thou

Hey,

Got a quote for a VL inline fuel pump new for $242!!!!

Where is best place to find external with surge?? and what's cost likely to be>??

Nisman - Hope u get those injectors, it was $100 a pop though, so $400 for lot, and they needed a service, so prolly $480 for 4....

Hey,
yeah - thats a decent price. I bought a near new unit for $100 which was allrady pollished to a mirror finish. Surge tanks can be bought for around $100-$120 and can be picked up from speed tuning shops, engineering joints or oyu could buy it again from Dyson or Dalton in Geelong!

stupid question and you'll probally laugh at me for asking but what exactly is the cam?

Nisman
18th February 2003, 12:40 AM
the cam is the like a shaft sort of like the crank. it has a heap of lobes on it, the rockers run on these lobes, and in turn open the valves, so basically the cam is what causes the valves to open.
by changing the cam you change how far the valves open, how long they open, how fast they open etc making it more powerful but compromising drivability.

and on the injectors, 100 each is way too much, 100 for 4 is cheap, but i have been quoted 120 for the set at ichiban.

Hey,

Cool, i got quoted $107 for the pre-pump, so $350 all up, and he said if i get both those and my injectors from him he'll do me a suuuper deal!!:bounce:

Nisman - I thought 4 new ones are like $600 so $400 seemed ok, but $120 for 4!!!! that's sweet, i'm probably gonna go with Rx7 S5 injectors 550cc i think

Hey,
your pre-pump should be fine. Unless you think its not doing the job. The other thing, is your going to have to install all this gear. The VL pump and surge tank is easy enough (you will end up spilling a bit of fuel in your boot though which the smell takes a while to go again... But the pre-pump will be hard to install. And be careful;l you dont go too big with injectors. 550cc is a bit overkill unless you wanna run 160kw+ Something like 350-400cc should be heaps for most people's plans - including mine!

hi i dont know so much about the cams. but how much is a stage 2 cam and what difference will it make? and what differences will i haev to make to the car apart from installing the cam?
Thanks!

Hey,
to install a cam - you will need to remove the head, which also means a new headgasket and a reasonable amount of work. The other thing to remember is that a cam change will only give your more power because its taking it away from other area's. Ie, a stage 3 cam will give you more power in higher revs, but you will loose a small amount of power from your lend end revs. A stage 2 cam would be perfect for a mild power output engine, letting the engine breathe a little more when you rev her out. you'd be looking at around $120 for a cam regrind, no difference in price for the different grinds....

you dont have to take off the head, just remove the drivers side engine mount, the rear engine mount and front one and jack the drivers side of the motor up enough so the cam will come out/in over the front guard.
its a bit of stuffing around, but it saves money

Hey,
yeah - remembered that after posting... But still, I think IO'd rather lift the head off (especially with a copper headgasket!!) to give things the once over. Especially since that your probably going to be 'testing' out teh new cam by thrashing the engine!!!

Thanks for the info guys.
Suppose I got a stage 2 Cam. Would I need to get double valve springs or an aftermarket ECU or injectors?

Nisman

you wouldnt really need double valve springs, these are only needed with big increases in lift and high reving, basically it is to stop valve bounce. I got them for two reasons, 1. i was planning a stage 3 cam
2. i kept fucking valve stem seals on my old motors from high reving, so i put them in the new motor to try holding the valves straighter to stop that problem.
it was probably not necessary, but for the $80 they cost me it was peace of mind.

stage 2 cam should run fine off the stock ecu, it might just idle poorly.
i definitely would suggest bigger injectors though.

Suppose I got a Stage 2 Cam, T25, intercooler,
would i Need bigger injectors (if so which ones?) and/or aftermarket ECU?
THanks guys!
