Alright guys

driving around last nite and all of the sudden i cant get it in these gears
and when i got it in 1st, 3rd or 5th and accel, the gearknob pulls back to where 2nd, 3rd and reverse gears are

is this an engine mount ?
possibly the back mount ?

cheers

I had that problem and that was the backmount in combination with the rigid bar.

turns out my front engine mount came completely off

was hanging down
think its fucked the rear one too cos now 2nd and 4th gears go in but are really easy to pop out

bah

*update*

yep my rear mount is broken! :/

yep, these gearboxes suffer catastrophically if the gear linkage system gets all dicked up, had a box lose everything whilst reversing out of driveway and then no more!

believe it or not its a common problem.
I have fixed this 4 times now, and all 4 times were from different causes.
1 mates exa, he broke a rear mount
another mates exa, the plastic bushes in the uni joint were worn, (they are so small i couldnt believe the trouble they caused)
another mate with an exa hit a rock and slightly bent the selector shaft, we had to cut it and weld a bit into it to fix that
another mate with an et had a problem with the foulcrum adjustment of the gear selector. It just fucked up all of a sudden and he lost, 2nd 4th and reverse.
just took the gear boot off, and adjusted it and all good again.

True! i cant remember how many times i fixed that before.

Last soultion was making some mods to the mounts. From that i haven't any problem yet.

The gear selection problem usually starts with the rear engine/gearbox bracket becoming loose, which strips or vibrates out the mounting bolts until the engine & gearbox drops down (& bounces around while driving), misaligning the shift linkage ( + bending or breaking whatever it can).
I had to helicoil my gearbox stud holes the first time, the second time was the last time I was going to have this problem. Built on a dummy block, sump & belhousing, I sat it sump side up with all mounting brackets along the 'gearbox to engine' joint fitted. I then welded a piece of 25x25x3 angle to join the front bracket to the rear bracket (sump side) picking up the belhousing bolt along centre line, then cut & welded bracket (from inlet side of engine block) to the 25 angle.
This spreads the load of power over the whole engine/box (instead of 2 anchor points). The only problem is you can't remove the gearbox without taking the engine out at the same time.
This conversion coupled with a tube of sikaflex injected into all engine mounts (especially the front & rear which take engine torque twist), with bolts tight will stand up to a sh1tload of power through a brass button clutch.., no problems there for about 5 years.

Hmmmm... perhaps I should start investigating... my fifth is often quite tricky to get into (requires quite a precise flick!)... may I ask why Nissan didn't use a cable-type selector system on these cars?

Yeah I had a simmilar problem with my gear stick.
It was just the link between the gear box and the stick which had snapped.
Got my mechanic to weld it back together for free.
Its a biatch of a place to get too.
