My steering rack is leaking and the pump is very noisy.
Has anyone else had this problem?
What's the cost to fix/replace>?
I've been uoted $1000 for a change over rack and pump, seems a bit expensive to me!

err..
try using LUCAS power steering fluid ..
it costs about $15 a bottle,
but after bout 3 -4 bottles,
you should notice the leak has gone, or very slow leak !

It still leaks and the noise gives me the s#$%s! :mafia:

I think the previous owner ran it dry on more than one occasion.

I think the only solution is replacement.

Thanks anyway

change the pump if it grinds...then add the treatment for the rack...but the problem with adding treatments usually are that they swell the seals then after a while they eat the seals.
changing the pump is a do-it-yourself'er, changing the rack-send it elsewhere if you dont want the headaches.

Power steering leaks you say? Welcome to the world of the Nissan Exa, I found the cheapest way around this problem is to buy power steering fluid in bulk, and buy a tray to put under your car.

Well, that's what I've resorted to after paying big bucks to have my steering rack re-conditioned, and then have it start leaking again about a month after its warranty ran out. motherfuckers. I'm sure they planned it that way.

sorry to hear...
but it sounds like the 30/30 warranty to me...
30 feet or 30 seconds, which ever comes first.
thats how they get everybody.

$1000??? why is it costing people so much?

When i had mine done about 7-8 months ago, im pretty sure i paid at the maximum around $600 which included basically everything in the power steering rack...

Havent had any problems so far, (crosses fingers)!

You can fix the leaks yourself

All you need is the parts

For the rack ends

2 x seal kits part number
49297-D4127 (K seal-d rear h)
This will do the rack ends comes with metal bushes seal oring and teflon ring (note: hte seal in this kit canonly be bought genuine i tryed 10 shops ans noone had seen anything like them as they have a teflon sleve built in )

Cost is about $35 each

To fix pinion
1 x seal non genuine is KOK TC12460
1X seal non genuine KOK TC12426 about diameter of 20c coin
1x oring not sure of art number yet but as soon as i get it ill post
it here

The seals for the pinion are all non genuine parts i got from a local bearing supplier they are the brand KOK

Cost $5 each seal and about $1 for the oring
A genuine pinion kit will cost you around $32 i can get part number if anyone needs it
I would also suggest putting new rack boots on after recoing the rack

All up to reco the rack is less than $100 and about a days worth of work

I hope this helps

yup, do it yourself. The hardest part is getting the bastard out. I'm probably doing longroad's very shortly, then I'm going to have to do mine. The neverending exa-story... least I haven't broken anything I have fixed or replaced, yet ;)
