My NX badly needed an oil change so I seached the net and I found that 5W30 is what Nissan recommends for the SR20DE. So today I went to a couple of shops where I was told that Castol Formula R is the only oil available in 5W30, which is around $45 for 5 litres. I was just curious as to what everyone else uses in their beast?

I use Shell Helix Ultra 5w-40w if that's any indication.
$60 a bottle, the grey one :D

I'm using Mobil 1, no dramas. Lots of oil information at http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/.
Now, what brand oil filters should we be using?

The genuine Nissan article seems to be the best in regards to performance and start up oil pressure.
Valvoline and Ryco tended to give a bad noise when starting the car up. Since the switch to NISSAN, never gone back!!! :D
Don't skimp on your motor!!!

Another vote for Mobil 1, but I use the full synth, 10w30 with Nissan OEM Oil Filter...no problems, no valvetrain noise, good shit.

I use Castrol Synthetic R 5W30. I tried it last December and am not going to be using anything else (might try genuine Nissan though). Mobile 10W30 is to $$ for me! I get the Castrol for $40 when it's on sale at Supercheap, Autobarn etc.
I've also been using Ryco filters (Z442) because it has the anti-drain valve. I'll try the Nissan one next and see if it makes a difference to the startup noise I get.

Hey wheelspin - I think I had a Nissan oil filter in before changing it over to a Ryco one. It use to sound fine on start ups but now it rattles for a second or two - I keep forgetting to get a new Nissan one like everyone suggests, to see if it disappears again.

im using some silverline brand. thats what my dad came home with one day so he put it in. anyways, i havnt noticed any start up noise but not im sure if it has that anti drain thing. i noticed that the holes on the metal part on the underside were a bit bigger than the one previously on so i guess its a bit better letting more oil into the filter. *shrugs*

i use ryco but i'm a bit bias cause my dad was engeniering manager there for 9 years so he used to come home with boxes of the things as for the rattling noise i can't hine any light on that one because i havn't got an nxr yet, the only thing i can think of is maybe u've got the wrong sized fillter.
