just another question. i dont no wat it is but every time i exelr8 in a high gear a tapping noise from the engine comes for about 5 seconds then goes away. i thought it was the tappets at first but when the windows are up and you listen for it it sounds like something is loose. any ideas?

I know its hard to describe a tapping noise, but is it louder at the top or bottom of the engine? driver or passenger side? how often do you change your oil & filter? how old is the engine?
Last of all, can you record the sound? It could be something vibrating and tapping, it might be a bearing, it might even be something inside the gearbox. Does the tapping occur if u suddenly punch the accelerator at low-mid RPM going up hill (or while engine is under load)?
Sorry for all the questions but yeh, it could be a lotta things and I'm not willing to guess yet hehe.

hey dudes
i think its a exhaust leak..... or the motor is labouring.... which send a major vibration down the exhaust system and therefore its slapping against something...
good luck

Retard the timing a few degrees your hearing what is called pinging what fuel do u use as this can cause it if its shit fuel you should be using premium unleaded
pinging sounds like a metallic rattle in the engine for a few seconds when you hit the throttle in high gear under load

I agree with turbo18exa, it sounds like its pinging. This is really bad for your engine dude. Get the computer checked out. How many k's have you done, it could be a stuffed seat in your head, i.e. u need a rebuild. Or a dodgy injector, stuffed crank angle sensor or the cam tang broken. Theses are just the comon things that can cause pining that i know there are porbably alot more. However its hard to tell exACTLY WHAT IT IS WITHOUT HEARING THE CAR though.

Also pinging can occur in any gear through the rev range, its just easier too notice at higher gears cause the engine isn't usually as loud.

yeah but all is said and done mate, it could just be your heatshields that are rattling. If so all that needs to be done is spot weld them back on

i havnt been listening to where it was coming from but i will next time i drive it. the car has only just done 151000 and its an 88 model. it could be the fuel cos i dont use premium unleaded but ill try that as well. in low gears you cant hear it at all and if your in a high gear but no pressure is on the engine it doesnt make the noise either. its just if i exelr8 up a hill in a high gear or the engine has to work hard.
