g'day all,
I changed the oil out of my NXR (given up on trying to fix the windows for now) and the oil came out thick and black :hitwall:
I used some Valvoline XLD Premium 10W30 and did a quick run and the oil is black again. I'm guessing in her past life the owner did not maintain her well enough.
What I wanted to know is, is it worth it to drive a few hundred k's and then change the oil out and keep doing this until all the black stuff comes out? I was told that I shouldn't use that oil flusj stuff because it may flush away too much stuff and open up a whole can of worms.
TIA
Mek
If anyone has a good name for my car (feminine :heehee: ) I'm open to suggestions

I think you'll just end up with the same issue if you bump up the frequency of oil changes...that's just me, I've never seen really good results with just changing the oil repeatedly. The best option would be to use the oil flush junk, think you're supposed to put it in, run the car for 5 minutes and then change the oil. Yes, you could potentially cause a seal to fail, that's definately a risk. I'd switch over to Mobil 1 full synthetic after that...not too hard on the wallet and extremely high quality. Most people I know with sr20's swear by it.

yeah sounds like it hasnt been changed very regularly.... just use some engine flush....
one mechanic thats been in the game for well over 40 years reckons penrite oil is the best, i tend to agree.... i put penrite and nulon for worn engines... mine runs noticable smoother now....
nissan would recommend any synthetic oil..... try and few and u decide...

Me and all my car buddies all wouldn't put any thing but mobile one synthetic in our cars...

Everytime you do an oil change from now on do it properly with an oil cleaning agent.
You add it to the old oil and run it for awhile then drain it.
Do that everytime and it should start to get better!

there are a few things you can do to get rid of the sludge problem your sr has and the first would be to put some diesel into the oil then run the car. we arnt talking massive amounts eitehr this is what we do at work on the bmw;s especially around the time when mobile 1 had a issue with mobil fuel and caused huge issues with bmw and mercedes engines some 5-6 years ago. the additives in both would mix togetehr and prematurely sludge the engine up and excessively wear the bore liners out.(nicaseal)so we now only use castrol. i personally dopnt like mobil for this reason.anyway back onto getting rid of the sludge the other popular way is to change the oil and filter one night making sure the engine is very hot before you do it and leave it craining over night so every last drop that can be drained will ne drained. then in the morning fill it up with new filter etc and drive the car for a long period of time that day not just idling in the driveay really work it. then have it stinking hot again draining over night once more then fill it up with the new fresh ouil and filter once more and the engine will be fresh once more and be cleaned from all its sludge. almost all oil drained from a engine will be black due to carbnon diposits etc from blow by and all sorts. so dont be too concerned unless the filter material breaks down its so bad usually its fine . i change my oil and filter 5000 at the very maximum and my motor is better for it. removal of the rocker covers shows this to the entent it looks almost brand new.the oil also is in decent nick when draining at this point and hasnt broken down enough toi start causing nasty damage. i do not believe the current service shedule for somem cvars these days(25000 kays!) is a good idea as for their first service the motor has already worn a fair amount and maintaining this gap can serverely shorten the lifespan of the motor. anyway enough rambling. it isnt hard to fix this problem.even removing the rocker cover for a look wouldnt hurt. if you do clean the underside of the rocker cover also.

did u change the oil filter when u changed the oil this should be done every time u change the oil, as for the valvoline u'r using u shouldn't have any problems with it i run it in my car and have had no problems with it however it wouldn't hurt to go to moble 1 synthetic or valvoline synthetic. eather way u go make shure u change the filter with the oil and make sure u dip u'r finger in the old oil and use that to lubricate the seal on the new fillter.

quoting brandsa unfortunately isnt the best thing to do with the unintiated as they may just walk in and say valvoline thanks and you could walk away with something that your engine doesnt necessarilyt will like to run on. look in your servie booklet for the oil type(like 10w/40)this is a refernce for the opil operating range(temperature) and how think it is. take this booklet into your local oil place and buy a well documented brand such as castrol or penrite etc.the only oil i wouldnt use is the stuff they sell at safeway lol. nice idea with the oil of the oil filter seal. but make sure the old one isnt stuck on the oil block itself too.

Black oil means the motor is either beingh cleaned out and the additives in the oil is working properly or you have sludge and need a clean out. Make sure your car is not running rich either.

Oil goes black becasue thats what it is supposed to do! The black is the dirt/sludge in suspension, the filter strains out the big bits of sludge and the oil holds all the little bits in suspension until the next oil change. If left too long it goes really thick and sludgy, definately not good.
You didn't define "thick and black" so its all hypothetical anyway.
Too thick and black is no good, but not too thick and black is OK so where exactly does your oil sit in the relative levels of thickness and blackness????
If you have just brought your car I would suggest changing the oil and filter immediately, running it for a few days and changing both again.
The detergents in the oil are enough you do not need additives.
If your engine is depending on the carbon buildup to seal it you are in big trouble, time for a rebuild!
